Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
JOSEPH LEFFEL, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
iMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED KNIFE AND CANE-STRIPPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 51,326, dated December 5, 1865 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEFFEL, of the city of Springfield, county ofOl-arke, and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Mode of Making Knives for Stripping and Cutting SugarOane; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
I make my blade of any desirable size and length, and for about three inches from the handle of nearly double width. On this wider part of the blade, and near to the back, I attach with a screw a steel plate or clamp, A, which has an eccentric motion on the screw, and which, about midway of its length, rests on a pin, B, near the back of the blade, and thence diverging from the back of the blade runs to a point, forming, with the back of the blade, an open space between in the shape of an acute angle. Immediately in the rear of the said pin B the clamp A is carved on the under side to correspond with a similar curve on the back of the blade, the two curves form ing a circular opening large enough to admit I a stalk of cane. Between the clamp A and the handle of the knife I attach to the blade a spring, 0, which passes up over the hack of the clamp A, to keep it to its place while strippingthe cane. The knife is applied to the top of the cane, the stock passing through the an gular space between the clamp A and the back of the blade into the circular opening, when, by a downward motion of the knife, the cane is stripped, and is cut oft at a blow.
The advantage of this construction is the ease and facility with which the caneis stripped.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'Ihecombination of a clamp and spring with the blade of the knife, the said clamp having an eccentric motion on the screw, and its fore part forming an angle with the back of the blade, for the uses and purposes herein described.
JOSEPH LEFFEL.
