LSPECIFICATION-forming15m of Letters attentive. 511,992, dated January 2,1894.
Beit known that-I, JOSEPH S. BLACKBURN,
oE'Salern,-in the county of Columbiana and. State ofOhio, haveinventeda new and Im' proved Hose-Coupling, of which the following `is Iadnll, clear', and exact description. y My invention .relates dto4 a hose coupling,
and it has for its object toprovide such aJ @couplingwhich will be exceedingly simple and durable, and economic inconstruction, the coupling he'ingso made that when 'two Sectione of hose are brought `together having l. the improved couplingapplied, thelsad sec-` ftion's when forcedto a contact will automati-V `ally onple onewith the. other.
r feature ofthe" invention consists' Anci vin providing a means whereby there will be no possible leak at' the junction of two sec-1 tions of` hose, and likewise to construct the couplingin such manner that an uncoupling nii-sections may beexpedtiously and con` .veniently eected.` Y v l Y The invention consists in the novel con:
struction and combination'of the several parts, as wiil 'be hereinafter fullyset forthandpoint- A edout inthe claims.
Reference is lto be had to theiaccompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification,
"in which similar' figures and letters of referyence indicate correeponding parte in all the views.
` Figure 1 is a side elevationof twosections Y of hose connected by the improved coupling.- Fig.,v 2 is a longitudinal lvertical section through two coupledsections of hose, the sectiony being taken practically onl the line ,2f-f2 of Eli-g4. VFig..`3` is a side elevation of the parte ofl the coupling removed from the hose;
v and-Figeis a plan viewbf two secto'nsof (in Fig. 1.
'hose connected bythe coupling, the viewbe ing taken at right-angles. tothejiew shown The coupling is eections are tubular, andthe seetionA-,couicned, orgrooved in anysut'able or approved mannerwi'n order that ily-may cling tightly to the hose into which it .is introduced, and the which head at its outer end 1sprovidei;wth `a beveled,surfaced?, the bevel extending said section furtherconsists-0f a headll,

from-the exterior inwardly in direction of the r bore or inner lchamber` of` the Section;v and at a'proper; distance back of the beveled surface 5 5` 12 of the head an annular channel 13, is made` in said head,-the' front wall ofifwhich channel is straight while the rear wall is inclined or 1 beveled 'frolnthe' outer lsurfaceof the head downward and4 forward in direction-of the 6oV straight wall. of the groove. Thus the pecnliarformation of the annular grooveor channel l3`provides a" Shoulder 14, which is the ,straight-wall of ,the` groove,`and anV the head is of greater diameter than the shankldof v6,5v
the 'sect-ion, 'a rear shoulder 15, .is formed at `the junction of the'shauk with thelead.; The 'boreor chamber 16'in the coupling is more or less conical in shape, the 'outer endlof'the 'bore beingofgreater diameterthan the inner 7o end, as is bestshownin Fig.'2. f i e The opposing sectionB of thecoilpler con lprisesa `head or bodytsectionl, which is of -1 cylindrical' shape, and? Aisi 'preferably quite. smooth, and a shank 1.8, ordinarily made .in-` 75 tegralWith the head or body section, the said shank being'ronghened or grooved-in' simi- ,e lar manner `to the 4shank of thesectiQn-A.
vThe shankjand body or head' ofthe section B, are providedfwithabore or interior 'cham- 8o ber 19, extendng'through from end. toend.
j This chamber is preferably made Ain two diameters, it's Vgreatest diameter being' at the outer end of the section; and wthinfth larger por` -tion of, the bore orchamber a tube 20, isdn- 85 {sertedhe said' tube `being madeaireferablyffof rubben'although it, may'benijadeoianye equivalentgwater orvgsteam proof (material. v The flexible tabel,llyistttedjsogtightly inthe l section B thatit will not slip outnthe'refroin, 9o' 'butitl may bedrawn out when itisfnecessary'to insert another tube.. l g 1 r The tube 2 0,projects some distance-beyond' the outer' face of the section B, as shown in Fig. 2,"andatvits outer andthe innervsurfaceygsg be is made Vmoreor less bellshaped 'The section B is further provided vwith two, f
`clamping jaws, de,sig'ziated as 'C; V, Each jaw consiste'l of a semi-circular body 21, and the "roo said body is provided at one of-itsiends with y a lever arm 22, extending ata right angle from it, and at its center each 'body isv vprovided with a spring tonguedmother-form the arm. The jaws are placed oppositely B, and are pivoted thereto by means o f .pins 424:, ordinarilytwo in-numberand oppositely .otally connect bothV jaws with the' -body'of the A -1 any suitable or approved manner, and when heads of the couplingsec'tions are engaged f the'jaws will engage with the shoulder 14 of other, Vthe elastic or nexium tabaco, winne Vexpanded to such an extent that itwiil hug y closely tothe inner face of the said coupling t f surfaces of the levers, or those surfaces to be engaged by the fingers to operate thejaws, i are at opposite sides of the levers, but said Aplace th`e=said wallout of alignment with the edge-ef\the slots in the 'jawsofi thesection B,
willfbe tightly coupled, and cannot be drawn Ok J5 directions upon the' seetionsio'f the hosegrv hy Ymanip ujiating` Itlerli'ose-in anyway; lan@- g when. the two. sectionsofj theepn'pling are brought together, the inner flexible tube20, ,will havee'ntered theborein the couplingsfec-l sections' will be perfectly covered, and when of spring, extending in the same direction vas upon the head or body portion ofgjthe section disposed, the two pins being utilized to piv-` section; and in placing the jaws together, the lever of one jaw is diametrically opposite the lever of the opposing jaw, and the"bea'ring surfaces may be. on the same side of the hose, and such location is preferred. The jaws extend some distance beyond the' outer face of the body of the secti0n,and preferably slightly beyond the outer'end of the flexible tube 20, and each jaw is provided with a diametrically transverse opening in its body 4portion, and the outer wall .of the opening is carried inwardat an angle a sufficient distance to e rear wall of the slot, the inwardly-extending wallbeing designatedv in the drawings as 25". The shanks of the twosections are introduced into the ends of diterent sections of hose to be united, and areheld within the hose in the Shanks are properly placed in the haseA sections, the inner shoulders or faces et the ot the hose sections, as`V the jaws will close roundthe head'oiv the section A, and-.the inwardly struck portions of the section A, and the two sections ofi the hose'.l
-apart Vby simply exerting tension in opposite tion A, and thereby thajoints between :the two water 1 or steam.v Passes Afrom one, section vto the section z f-In order to eiect an uncoupling, the lever of either jaw is pressed in a manner to force the jaw with which it is connected outward, and atthat time the section A, may be readily withdrawn. By carrying inward one wall `of-the'slot 25 in each jaw an interior rib is formed, but I desire it to be understood that this' rib -may vbc produced in any other approved manner.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byjLetters A 1. In a hose coupling, the combinatiomwith a section having a shoulder, of a second section adaptedy to abut against the first named section, springcontrolled jaws pivoted upon thtrsecond section andextending longitudilnally thereof, the ends of the said jaws protruding in front vof vthe section and being adapted for engagement with the shoulder of the first section, and lovers located exteriorly of the 4sections and connected withthe jaws for raising the same out of contact with the said shoulder, as and for the purpose set forth.
