NTTED STATES PATENT HENRY O. BEARDSLEY, OF NEW DULUTH, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO CHARLES HURD, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
oooR-LAToi-i.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,397, dated December 12, 1893. Application tiled September 29, 1392. Serial No. 447,212Y (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI, HENRY C. BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents aside elevation of my invention, showing a detached section of a portion of a refrigerator" with the lock attached. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view, taken at the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a side View of the lock catch removed from the lock. Fig. 4, is a vertical central section, taken at the line 4-4, Fig. l; and Fig. 5, is a detached view of the striking-plate of the lock, looking into the strikin,f ,r-plate The object of my invention is to make a simple, cheap and durable refrigerator lock, with a catch that will force and hold the door tightly closed. l
My invention consists of the devices and combination of devices hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth and specified in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A, represents a portion of the refrigerator wall; B, a portion of the door of the refrigerator.
O, is the lock case to which the back-plate of the lock is secured by the screws D.
E, is a receptacle firmly secu red to the backplate of the lock caseC.
F, is a sliding catch which rests and slides in the receptacle E which is secured to the back-plate G of the lock.
The portion of the striking-plate, H, which the catch F of the lock strikes, has an inclined surface, I, so that the catch as it is forced behind the striking-plate presses the door tightly closed.
J, is a cogged or toothed segment pivoted to the lock at L. I prefer to provide this segment with a sleeve, J', which extends through the lock case to which the handle M is se.
curely fastened, and through which the screw L passes, serving as a pivot on which the cogged segment turns. It also has a handle, M, serving as a weight, firmly secured to the Segment T and turns with it on the pivot L.
which the large end of the catch F is drawn,
and P, is a shoulder against which it strikes to limit its backward thrust.
Q, is a stop-pin, against which the cogged segment J strikes to limit its forward thrust, which at the same time limits the forward thrust of the catch F.
My lock is very cheap in construction, be-
-ing composed ot' only a few parts. It is dnrable, being easily operated-and is especially adapted to be used on refrigerator doors, and other articles where it is desired to keep the door tightly closed. The inclined surface of the striking-plate and the power which is readily applied to the slidingcatch by means of the handle and cogged segment enable the operator to force the door tightly closed, and
the .weight of the handle will prevent it from becoming loose or opening until the handle is raised.
Having fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door lock, the back-plate of the lock provided with a receptacle EA for a slidingcatch; the lock-catch provided on its upper edge with cogs or teeth; a cogged segment provided with a hollow sleeve which projects through the lock-case; a weighted handle firmly secured to the sleeve; the screw passing through this hollow sleeve and into the door, forming a pivot on which the segment is turned by the handle; the striking-plate provided with an interior inclined surface against which the catch-bolt strikes to hold the door firmly closed bythe action of the weighted handle, all as specified and shown.
HENRY O. BEARDSLEY.
