.Be it known that I, JAMES K. BRAMMER, a cltizen of the United Stf` tes, residing at Crosstown, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Book; Rest.7 of which the followingisaspeeification.

My invention relates to that class of bookrests designed to be secured to tables, chairs, and other articles of furniture, and to support books in convenient positions for perusal.

The objects of my invention are to produce a restof this kind, the same being so constructed as not to mar or impair the furniture to which it is applied; that is longitudinally adjustable so as to be brought a'proper distance from the veyes of the peruser and which may be inclined or disposed at any angle in accordance with the position of the peruser.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawingszF-Figure l is a perspective view of a book-rest embodying my Invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the swiveled post, ratchet, and slide-block. Fig. 3 isa sectional View through the clamp, its pads, and a p0rtion of the swiveled arm. v

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the igures of the drawings.

The U-shaped clamp consists of the upper and lower clamping members l and 2 respectlvely, said members being adj ustably connected together so as to t over'objects of different thickness. The upper member 1 is provided at its outer end with a depending tenon 3, the same being rectangular in crosssection, provided with a threaded bore 4 at its lower end, and at its opposite sides with vertical ribs 5. The lower clamping member 2 1s provided with a back wall, and the same has formed therein a central recess or mortise 6 having opposite longitudinal grooves 7, and theV bottom of said mortise is provided with an opening 8 which aligns with the bore 4 of the tenen 3. It will be seen that the tenen will tit the mortise 6, the ribs 3 of said tenen taking into the grooves 7 at the sides of the mortise, and when in that position the bore 4 and opening 8 align. 9 is passed upwardly through the opening into the bore Ltof the mortise, the shoulderv of the screw binding against the under side of the lower clamping member. In order to avoid marring the furniture to which this clamp may be applied,I preferably locate between the binding faces of the clamping members and the furniture, cork or rubber pads 10, which are preferably let into the said faces of the members. The upper member 1 is provided at its center with a boss l1, the same having acentral bore and receivinga cylindrical stud l2 formed on the inner end of an arm 13 whereby the latter is swiveled upon the clamp. The arm 13 is rectangular in cross-section and has its opposite sides or faces provided with longitudinal grooves 14, the outer ends of the grooves being closed by a rectangular stop-plate l5 through which a screw is passed into the end of the arm. lA sliding block 16 is mounted upon the arm 13, and has its under side recessed as at 17 to fit over the upper side or face of the arm 13, the opposite walls of the recess being provided with ribs 18 which engage with the grooves 14 of the arm 13. The block is tapered upon its upper side and is further provided with a circular bore 19. In the bore 19 there is swiveled thelower reduced tenon 20 formed upon the swiveled post2l, and said post terminates at its upper end in a transversely disposed cylindrical head 22, which is provided with a horizontal bore 25 and is bifurcated. Through the bored bifurcations of this post passes a horizontally disposed cylindrical bar 26, the same bearing inthe head and heilig adapted for rocking. The bar is flattened at its center or at a point between the bifurcations of the head and hasl swaged thereon or otherwise secured a ratchet disk 27 the same being located between the bifurcations of the head i of the standard 21. Located in a slot 28 formed in one side of the standard 21 is a locking pawl 29, the same being pivoted as at 30 between its ends within the slot and having a spring 3l interposed between its lower end and the bottom of the slot, whereby the upper locking end of the'pawl is held normally in engagement with the teeth of the disk and hence prevents the rockshaft or bar 26 from moving in one direction. A horizon`1 tal rest 32 projects outwardly from the rock shaft, and a supporting frame 33 projects from said rock-shaft at a right angle to the rest. The supporting frame and rest may be of any desired construction, but in the present instance is formed of reticulated wire, which is preferred. Loosely hung upon the bar of the rest is a T-shaped leaf-holding clamp 35, the same beingl formed of spring wire and provided with a knob 36 by means of which it may be raised from contact with the leaves of the book, thereby permitting of a turning of said leaves.

This completes the construction of the invention, and it will be seen therefrom that I accomplish in a simple and convenient manner the objects hereinbefore set forth; that the device as a Whole may bc cheaply manufactured and sold; may be conveniently applied to various pieces of furniture; will not mar the same by reason of its presence; and that it is capable of supporting books in an open position at any distance from the eyes of the pernser or reader convenient to him and at any angle. In order to alter the angle the lower end of the pawl is pressed so as to disengage the upper end thereof from en gagev ment with the ratchet disk,then by grasping the rest with the other hand it may be raised or lowered to suit the operator. Immediately upon a release of the pawl a relooking of the parts will take place.

It will be observed that various changes in the minor details of my invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in this class of devices, and I therefore do not limit the invention to the precise details which I have herein shown and described, but hold that I may vary the same to any extent and degree Within the scope of my invention Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having described my invention, what I claim is l. In a book-rest, the combination with the book-support, and a swiveled arm, of a clamp for supporting the arm, said clamp consisting of a pair of clamping sections, one of which is provided at its rear end with a bored tenon having ribs, and the other of which with a back wall recessed to receive the tenon and having grooves to receive the ribs, and an opening aligning with the bore, and a binding-sereT passing through the opening and into the bore, substantially as specified.

2. In a book-rest, the combination with a clamp and a horizontal arm swiveled upon the clamp and provided `with opposite longitudinal grooves, of a block recessed upon its under side and mounted upon the arm and having its side Walls provided with ribs for engaging the grooves of the arm, and a book support swiveled on the block. substantially as specified.
