UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. HOLLOW'AY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,663, dated November 28, 1893.
Application filed February 24, 1893. Serial No. 463,563. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. HOLLOWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in rocking chairs and has for its object to provide a spring attachment to the rockers of such chair so that the said chair will have an easy springy movement when in use.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a side elevation of a rockingchair with my spring attachment thereon. Fig. 2, is asectional side-elevation of the yoke for adjustably securing the spring to the rocker, and a part of the spring. Fig. 3, is an end-elevation of the same and showing the set-screw, for securing the yoke at any desired position on the rocker.
Referring to the drawings, the letter, A, represents the chair; a, the rocker to which the spring is applied, and, B, the spring attached thereto. Said spring is preferably flat like a strap and is bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the bottom and near the forward end of the rocker, Ct, whence it passes beneath the rocker, like a shoe, back and curves up and over the rear end of the rocker, as at, c, and its down curved extremityis secured by a bolt, 1), in the top of the stirrup or yoke, 17, which fits over and embraces the rocker. A set-screw d, is employed to secure the yoke at any desired position on the rocker. It may be easily seen that by moving the yoke toward the front of the rocker, the tension of the spring may be relieved, and by moving it toward the rear end of the rocker the tension may be increased. In this manner the intensity of the spring-action to lift the end of the rocker may be adjusted to suit the weight or preference of the user.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 1. The combination of the chair having rockers; a spring secured to the bottom of each rocker thereof, each spring being attached at its forward end'to the forward end of the rocker and extending back to the rear end of the rocker and passing up and over said rear end and secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a rocking-chair; a spring secured to the bottom of each rockerthereof, said springs being attached at their forward ends to the bottom of the rocker, and extending back and at the rear curving over the rear end of the rocker and a stirrup or yoke to which the curved end is connected, said yoke being longitudinally adjustable along the rocker, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES T. HOLLOWAY.
