LOGK AND LATCH.
Patented Nov, 21, 1893.

LOCK -AN D LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,016, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed June 3, 1892. SerialNo. 435,447. (No model.) 7
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, OTTO J. ,BRUGMAN, a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvemen -s in locks and latches, especially designed for use on doors, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and the essential features particularly claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide means in connection with a door-lock for simultaneously locking both the latch and lock bolts, to render the lock doubly secure and proof 1 against picking, which object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved lock having one side of the case removed, and showing also in perspective the several parts removed, therefrom, their respective positions within the case being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lock having one side of the case removed, and the knob stem in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on dotted line 33 of Fig. 2. p
Referring to the letters of reference, A is the lock case, which is of the usual form.
B is the latch bolt, havingthe ordinary beveled end that projects through one edge of the case, and has its rear end provided with an enlarged head a, and an elongated slot b, through which the square shank of the knobstem 0 passes, and projecting from the center of said knob-stem at one side thereof is a lugc, having a wedge-shaped or inclined face that bears against the inner beveled face of the head a of the latch bolt B. Said lug 0 travels in a slot or way (1 formed in one side of the case A, and. has a shoulder e formed on the outer end thereof, that is adapted to strike against the case and limit the movement of the knob stem, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. By this construction, as the knobstem is drawn endwise through the case'A, the inclined face of the lug a traveling at an angle to the beveled face of the head a of the latch-bolt, will cause said .bolt to recede at a right angle to the movement of the knobstem, thus Withdrawing and disengaging its forward end from the keeper at which time the shoulder e on the lug a will have checked the movement of the knob-stem, as stated, when by releasing said knob-stem it will be returned to its formerv position by the latch bolt as it is forced outward by the action of the spring f. The body portion of the spring is formed in a coil f, that is received by the pin h, which also passes through the tumbler D and slot 2' in the lock-bolt E and into the case'A, the free ends of said spring having engagement, one with the latch-bolt, the other with the tumbler, as is common inlocks of thisclass.
Fjs an upright locking slide that is embolt andrendering the knob-stem immovable when the lock-bolt is inserted in its keeper. Said slide is located in a vertical position at the'rear of the latch and lock-bolts, and is sup ported upon the latter by means of the stem r, that projects at a right angle from the rear upper corner thereof, and extends through the rear vertical portion of the angular way s (formed in one end of the tumbler D) and into the vertical portion of the right-angled way t, formed in the rear edge of said slide, this beingthe normal position of the parts when the door is unlocked. (See Fig. 1.)
Formed in the lower frontedgeof the lockmovable both latch-bolt and knob-stem. The
rear lower edge of the lock-bolt is provided with a circular way u, similar to the one described in the locking-slide, and into which the wing of the key passes after having raised the tumbler'D to cause the horizontal portion of the angular way 5 to register with the stem 2? of the lock-bolt, which stem also registers with the horizontal portion of the right angled way 2,, and allows said stem to be carried therethrough as the lock-bolt is forced outward by the action of the key, which as it completes its rotation allows the tumbler'to drop by the tension of the spring thereon, and engage the stem t within the forward vertical portion of the H-shaped slot, see Fig. 2, in which position the tumbler locks said stem to retain the lock bolt in an extended position and support the locking slide in an elevated position to look from movement the latch-bolt and knob-stem, when, by a reverse motion of the key the parts will be unlocked and carried back to their former position, as will be readily understood. See Fig. 1.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the parts comprising my improved latch and lock are comparatively few, simple, and compact, forming a secure lock that can only be picked with great difficulty, and rendering natural and easy the manipulation of the knobs in operating the latch thereof, requiring only to draw or pull upon the knob as in opening the door from theinside, and to press or push upon the opposite knob when entering from the outside.
Having thus fully set forth my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination of the latchbolt, the lock-bolt having a right angle stem on the rear end thereof, the vertically reciprocal locking-slide having an angle way therein that receives the stem of the lock-bolt upon which stem said locking-slide is supported, said parts adapted to be actuated by the key, so as to raise said locking-slide into the path of the latch-bolt and carry said lock-bolt forward so that the stem thereon will support said locking-slidein that position. n
2. In a lock, the combination of the latchbolt, the lock-bolt having the stem at its rear end, the tumbler having an angular slot that receives said stem, the vertically reciprocal locking-slide having a right-angle way that also receives said stem, the end portion of the locking-slide when raised extending into the path of the latch-bolt, the spring engaging the tumbler and the latch-bolt, said parts being adapted to be operated, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO 'J. BRUGMAN.
