Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrin-n.
STEPHEN P. RUSH, OF TYRONE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM T.
HENDERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
MEAT-BLOC K1-ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,115, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed May 8, 1893- Serial no. 473,446. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN P. RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyrone, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Meat- Block Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to meat block attachments, and has for its object to provide simple and eifective means for securely clamping and holding a piece of meat thereon during the operation of cutting or sawing, and
on the line wa:, Fig. 2. Fig.4is adetail perspective view of a slight modification in the construction of the attachment.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a meat block used by butchers, which may be of any size, shape and preferred form of construction. To one side of the said block, near the bottom thereof, is located a staple or guide 2, and at the upper part of the same is a plate 3, supporting a horizontally-disposed ear 4, with a vertical opening 5 extending therethrough that is arranged in alignment with the said staple or guide 2, and at its outer edge is formed with a head 6, having a screw-opening 7 extending therethrough and communicating with the opening 5 in the ear 4. In the said screw-opening 7 is a setscrew 8, with a contiguous an'gularly-bent handle or grip 9,at the outer end thereof, and in the opening5 of the ear 4, and the staple or guide 2, is adjustably mounted a verticallydisposed rod 10, having a lower outwardlybent end 11 adapted to be engaged by the foot of the operator, and an upper inwardlybent engaging arm 12, with a downwardlyprojecting spiked fork 13 at its inner end adapted to be pressed into and through the meat by, the pressure exerted on the lower bent end 11 to hold the meat upon the block for the purpose of cutting or sawingthe same. When the rod has been properly adjusted it is held in its adjusted position by the set-screw 8, which will hold the said rod at any required elevation against accidental movement.
In Fig. 4 a pair of the staples or guides is employed, and also a pair of yielding arms 14:, having their central meeting ends outturned and embracing a cam 15, which is pivoted'therein and adapted to lock the rod in its adjusted position in a manner similar to th e construction heretofore set forth, the yielding arms acting .to produce a tension on the cam when the latter is forced against the rod.
The device herein set forth in either of its forms, may be readily applied to any block now in use with very little trouble and expense, and its use dispenses with the employment of spikes which have been commonly used and driven throughthe meat into the block, thereby defacing the latter. It will be understood that the spiked fork may have as many points as desirable, and also that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In combination with a meat block having-guides on the side thereof, of a rod adj ust ably mounted in said guides and having a lower out turned end to be engaged by the foot of the operator, and an arm at the upper end thereof which projects over the top of the block and has a downwardly-extending inner spiked end, andmeans for clamping said rod in its adjusted position, substantially asdescribed. 2. The combination with a meat block, 0 a staple or guide on one side adjacent to the lower part thereof, a plate attached to the upper part of the side of said block and carrying an ear with a vertical opening therein and a head With a screw-opening communicating with said vertical opening, a elamping screw In testimony that I claim the foregoing as mounted in said screw-opening, and a rod 10- my own I have hei'eto aflixed my signature in to cated and vertically movable in the said ear the presence of two Witnesses.
and staple or guide having a lower out turned STEPHEN P RUSH end and an upper inwardly-extending arm with a downwardly-projecting inner spiked Witnesses:
end shaped as a fork, substantially as de- W. WVALTON,
scribed. H. B. CALDERWOOD.
