Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER SOMMER, JOI-1N SOMMER, AND PETER W. SOMMER, OF TREMONT, ILLINOIS.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,219, dated August 15, 1893.
Application tiled December 3, 1892. Serial No. 454,305- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that we, PETER SOMMER, JOHN SOMMER, and PETER W. SOMMER, citizens of the United States, residing at Tremont, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wire fences, by means of which a fence is provided being simple in construction, durable and cheap in first cost.
More particularly, our invention relates to that class of Wire fences, formedlinto meshes by means of horizontal frame wires twisted into cables and of vertical pickets and consists essentially of a series of horizontal frame cables formed of two strands of wire twisted together, excepting that the -top cable and bottom cable may be formed of three, four or more wires, as desired and of perpendicular pickets held in position by means of the respective wires of the said cables being twisted upon the same at looped points therein, the said pickets being formed with a series of alternately, oppositely looped projections to assist together with a hooked head in holding them firmly in position and preventing the turning of the same.
That our invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure lis an elevation of a section of fence formed in our improved manner. Fig. 2 is a detailed View showing the looped picket with its hooked head and the manner in which the same is held in position by means of the cables.
In the gures, b-b-b, duc., and g, are hori- -zontal cables placed at varying distances oppositely adjusted, that is-the loop c, on opposite side from the loop c and each picket having the hooked head, formed at the top which may also be similarly formed at the bottom with the hooked end depending below the first loop in the bar, and is overlapped or twisted between the wires of the cables.
The wires bf-b-JJ, dac., are twisted upon the pickets a-a, dac., at the looped points c-c-c, &c., c--cc', &c., and the cable (g) and also the lower cable is twisted upon the top and bottom loops of the picket and also upon the ends of the hooked heads (if each end of the picket is hooked) th lis-preventing the picket (a.) from turning, any tendency to turn at any point, or at any loop by it being resisted by every other loop on the picket and also by the hooked headqor heads, and also preventing the said picket from slipping up or down, thus making a firm and durable fence. The advantage informing the fence in this manner is that a perfectly rigid fence is provided with -the respective parts thereof held in form and position to make the same to present at all times a fence of uniform mesh, thus adding to its appearance and particularly to its durability. T
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the cables b-andg the bars 0L-, formed with the oppositely, alternately looped extensions c-cand provided with the hooked head d, the said looped picket held in position by the wires of the cables bearing over the same at the looped extended portions and over the hooked ends of the said picket, all substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
PETER SOMMER. JOHN SOMMER. P. W. SOMMER.
Witnesses:
