SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,992, dated August 8, 1893. Application filed February 25, 1893. Serial No. 4:63,'723.v (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD J. PHILLIPS and JOHN A. LINHARL'ofA Baltimore, in the State of Maryland,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Pipes; and we do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in pipes and more particularly to such as are known as cigar pipes, the obj ect of the invention being to produce a cigar pipe which shall be cheap to construct, pleasing in appearance and which shall, in all respects, be effectual in the performance of its functions.`

With this obj ect in view the invention consist-s in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanyingdrawings: Figure lis a sectional view of our improved cigar pipe. Fig. 2 is a separate view of the tobacco tube or receptacle.

A represents a shell of wood or other suitable material and made of a shape to represent a cigar. The proper color to represent a cigar may be imparted to the shell in any suitable manner. p

In the bore a of the shell A, a tube or tobacco receptacle B of clay, meerschaum, or other suitable porous material, is inserted, and preferably permanently cemented in place,- said tube or tobacco receptacle being preferably of sufficient length to protrude beyond the outer end of the shell A, as shown in Fig. l, so as to have the appearance of ashes as they appear at the end of an ordinary cigar when the same is being smoked. The tube or tobacco receptacle B is preferably made quite thin and provided with a curved inner end or bottom b, through which an opening or passage c is made, said openin g or passage c aligning and communicating with a similar passage c in the inner end of the shell A. The passage c communicates with a chamber d made in the inner extremity of the shell A,said

`with which internal screwthreads e', in a mouth piece O are adapted to match. The mouth piece C, at the forward end of the screwthreaded portion is made with a shoulder f which abuts against a shoulder f on the shell A, and projecting from the forward end of the mouth piece is an annular ange g which overlaps the shell and thus eectually prevents the admission of any air or moisture between the mouth piece and shell. A passage 72. eX- tends entirely through the mouth piece C and at its inner end, screwtllreads 'L' are made for the reception ofthe external screwthreads t', on a short tube j. The tube j projects into the nicotinepchamber d, and thus prevents 'nicotine being drawn through the mouth piece into the mouth.

A cigar pipe constructed and arranged as above set forth is exceedingly simple, can be manufactured at a very small cost, is neat in appearance and effectual in the performance of its functions.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article of manufacture, a cigar pipe consisting of an outer shell having the general shape of a cigar, a mouth piece having the general shape of a cigar holder, the two screwed together, one provided with a nicotine chamber and the other with a removable nipple which projects into the nicotine chamber, and a lining fitted in the bore of the shell and projecting beyond the outer end thereof whereby the pipe has the appearance of a cigar holder and cigar with ashes on its outer end, substantially as set forth.
