To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. SHEFFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burr Oak, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Corn-Planter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corn-planters, the base or delivery end of which opens and closes like a jaw, and one of the objects of the in vention is to close the sides of said delivery end, to prevent the ingress of dirt and also to prevent the seed from flying out of the sides.
The invention further relates to corn-plant.- ers which have an adjustable disk for controlling the size of the seed-pockets; and it more especially relates to Letters Patent granted to George S. Sheffield October 13,1891, No.' 461,054, and the objects of this feature of the invention are to make the outer walls of the seed-box all in one part, as contrasted with the seed-box in the Letters Patent referred to, which was made of two parts, and to provide an adjustable flanged rin g immediatelyabove the seed-pockets,so as to accom-modate dierent thicknesses of the seed-pocket disk, all as more clearly explained below.
In the drawings forming a part of this specication, Figure l is a sectional elevation of the seed-box, on line x-w in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective, showing about one half of the adjustable flanged ring. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of that portion of the cornplanter which is immediately below the seedbOX.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the seed-box, the outer wall ot' which is made all in one part from top to bottom, as in Fig. 1. In the bottom of this seed-box, A, is a revoluble disk, B, containing the seedpockets, e, and immediately above this disk B, is the adjustable disk C, which is provided with openings over the seed-pockets registering with the seed-pockets, Fig. 3. By loosening the nut, D, of the bolt which holds these two disks together, the adjustable disk can be turned to fix the size of the seed-pockets as desired; substantially as appeared in the Letters Patent referred to. Immediately above the adjustable disk C and in the seed-box A, is a vertically adjustable flanged ring, E. This ringis right-angled in cross-section, as in Figs. l and 2, the vertical flange, P, thereof, fitting against the inner face of the wall of the seed-box A, and the horizontal flange, o, being over the adjustable disk C and just clearing the same, so that the disks B and C may be revolved Without undue frictional contact with said horizontal flange o. The flanged ring E is provided with vertically elongated holes, c, in its vertical flange, P, into which are passed bolts, c, said bolts being also passed through the Wall of the seed-box A. By this means, by loosening the bolt, e, the flanged ring E may be vertically adjusted. Two instances when the adjustment of the flanged ring E takes place may be named, viz., to accommodate disks B of diierent thicknesses, they being thus varied in thickness to control the depth of the seed-pockets, and said ring may be adjusted in case for any reason, such as rust or expansion of the metal, the adjustable disk C should bind against the flanged ring E. Of course it will be understood that F shows the delivery-orifice, leading from the seed-box A into the spout, H, which spout, in the complete constructed device would be immediately under said delivery-orifice, F. To the lower end of the spout H is rigidly attached the delivery-end, L'which consists of a back wall, e', and two side walls, a. To the walls, a, of the delivery-base, at s, is hinged the swinging door, J, which door indirectly connects with and is operated by the foot, L, of the planter. As illustrated in Figgt, the door, J, of the delivery-end, I, is closed, which the irst dotted position below Fig. 4L illustrates. When the operator, in planting, presses down on the foot, L, the door J will swingout, as in the dotted position below the first named dotted position, when the seed will be deposited in the ground. It will be seen that during the operation the sides are closed, as at a a, preventing the ingress of dirt and preventing the seed from ying out through the sides.
