Description

Patented" March 6 1847.
UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JNo. T. DAVY, or TROY, NEW YORK.
COAL-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,996, dated March 6, 1847.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. DAVY, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Stoves, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, which is an isometrical view of the stove.
The nature of my improvement consists in the manner in which I have conducted the smoke, &c. from the fire and the arrangement of the flues incident thereto.
The base of the stove is divided into three parts (a, a, b). The center part (b) is open in front and into it slides 'a common ash drawer over which the fire cylinder (0) is erected. Just above the fire pot there is an opening (6) on each side into a descending flue that starts at that point and extends down tothe base; a small mica window (g) is made in this flue through which the progress of the draft may be observed. Four hollow pipes (h) are placed one at each corner of the base, two of which open into each apartment (a) of the base, one on either side of the flue (f); up these the draft ascends into a cap or cornice (i) which has a similar apartment (a) on each side valve at the joint (m) can open a direct,
communication with the chimney without descending which is necessary in kindling the fire; a door is formed at the top of the stove through which the fire can be fed, and the side doors (0) are set in projecting flanches. Outside of the descending flues f) above described are air tubes (79) which pass down through the bottom and are open at both ends; up these the air ascends as it is heated at the hottest part of the flue and circulates through the room.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination and arrangement-of the flues with the cylinder so as to take the draft off on each side directly at the top of the fire and cause it to descend, thence ascend the corner fiues, as described, the stove having an opening in the top for fuel as above set forth.
