UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD B. WEBBER, OF COLLIERSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
CLOTH ES'PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,892, dated J' une 6, 1893.
Application filed September 24, 1892. Seria] No. 446,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'EDWARD B. WEBBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colliersville, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Clothes Pin or Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for securing clothes to lines during the process of drying, the objects in view being to provide a simple, durable and easily operated device, which is permanently carried by the line and may be cheaply manufactured.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved clothes-pin or fastener inthe operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the fastener detached.
The clothes pin or fastener', which is shown at A, is provided with a body-portion, B, substantially rectangular in shape, at the ends of which are formed the depending fingers, C, C, in the form of loops, and at the center of which is a depending loop, D, provided at its lower end with a securing coil, E, which fits upon the clothes line, shown at F. Between the depending lingers and the loop D are horizontal portions, which connect the ngers to the loop D, and convey the spring pressure of the latter to the formel-,whereby the lower ends of the fingers are pressed firmly against the side of the line. The lower or closed ends of the looped fingers are curved or bent rearward or under the line, to conform to the surface of the latter, and provide more bearing surface for the fingers.
The upper side or top of the rectangular body-portion of the fastener is formed by the connected free ends ofthe wire composing the same, my improved pin being formed of a single piece of wire, as clearly shown in the drawings.
In operation, the plus being permanently secured to the line are always in position to beused, and to engage an article of clothing therewith it is simply necessary to withdraw the free end of one of the ngers from the line by a pressure thereupon, and slide the pin to a position in which said finger will engage the edge of the garment.
It will be noted that the pin is simple in construction and may be readily operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A clothes pin or fastener having' a rectangular body-portion provided with terminal loops having rearwardly bent points and an intermediate loop terminating in a coil which receives the line, substantially as specified.
2. A clothes pin or fastener, formed from a single piece of wire, and having a rectangular body-portion, a central depending loop terminating in a coil to receive the clothes line, and terminal depending loops, arranged upon opposite sides of the central loop and provided with bent lower ends or points, the contiguous sides of adjacent loops being connected by integral horizontally extending portions, and the terminals of the wire being connected at the upper side of the body-portion, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as A my ownI have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD B. WEBBER. Witnesses:
