METALLIC FLASK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,406, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed April 4, 1892. Serial No. 427,762. (No model.)

provements in Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference be-i ing had to the accompanying drawings, iir which Figure 1 is section upon line 1 1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view.
My invention relates to improvements in holders of metallic flasks, and particularly to an improvement in the apparatus for casting metallic objects shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No..420,664, dated and issued February 4, 1890, to the Havana Press Drill Company, assignee of Harvey J. Phelps.
Heretofore it has been customary to place the sprue upon the top of the cope of the flask. By this arrangement the gate of the metal left when the flask was removed from the casting was left upon the end of the hub of the wheel, which rendered it difficult to break OH or otherwise remove the gate without breaking the hub; it often happened too that in the old way of pouring the metal against the end of the core the metal would blow, thereby causing imperfect Wheels; To obviate this I have designed the herein described mechanism, by means of which the sprue may be located upon the side. of the flask instead of at the end or on the top of the cope, thereby forming a shorter and smaller gate, which can be more readily broken off or otherwise removed from the hub of the Wheel. I attain this object by means of the mechanism hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings. That which I regard as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-1 indicates a metallic flask consisting of a drag 2 and cope 3.
4 indicates a frame for the drag which is provided with four radially extending arms 5.

8 indicates an upright extending upward from the top surface of the frame 4, and upon the opposite side of the flask from that in The uprights 11 are provided with upward and outward extending arms 12 and 13; the arm 12 is of such a height that its top may come upon a level with the top of the upright 11; the arm 13 is shorter, and is of such length as to support the flask frame 4 when inclined to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The upright 11 is provided at its top'with a recess 14 adapted to receive the ends of the pivot pins 10, and these pins are so located on the frame 4 that the latter is held by gravity in the position indicated by full lines Fig. 1 or in the position indicated by dotted lines Fig. 1.

The operation of my device is as follows: The frame of the flask is placed, as is shown in the full lines in Fig. 1, with the drag of the flask, in position when the wheel is placed in position, as described in Letters Patent, No. 420,664, and the cope of the flask is placed upon the drag; the lever 7 is brought down over the top of the cope to the drag and secured in place by the pin 9 in the top of the upright 8. The frame is then tilted into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position the sprue 15 will be upon the upper side of the flask and the metal can 'be poured into the sprue.
I have not shown or described herein the form of the flask or devices for holding the core in position, neither have I described the device for securing the wheel to the frame forthe purpose of casting the hub upon it, as the form of this is not in any way essential to this invention.
I do not confine myself to the precise form of upright 8 and pin 9 hereinabove described as it is obvious that other means could be provided for locking the lever 7 in place 501- the purpose of holding the cope upon the rag.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a flask 1 consisting of a drag 2 and a cope 3, of a frame Hon supporting said flask, pivots 10 secured to said frame, uprights 11 adapted to receive the pivots so as to support the frame and provided with two arms 12 and 13 projecting upward and outward in opposite directions from said uprights, one of said arms having its upper end arranged to support the frame in a horizontal position and the other to support the frame in an inclined position, and means for holding the cope uponthe drag, substantially as described.
2. Theoombination with a flask 1 consistingof a drag 2 and a cope 3, of a flask-sup porting-frame 4 having pivots 10 secured thereto at one side of the center thereof, uprights 11 supporting the pivots of the frame and provided witht- wo arms 12 and 13 projectingupward and outward in opposite directions from said uprights, one of said arms having its upper end arranged to support the frame in a horizontal position and the other to support it in an inclined position, and means for holding the cope upon the drag, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a flask 1 consisting ofa drag 2 and a cope 3, of a frame 4 for supporting said flask, pivots 10 secured to said frame, uprights 11 adapted to receive said pivots so as to support said frame, and provided with two upward and outward extending arms, 12 and 13, said arm 12 being adapted to support said frame in a horizontal position, and said arm 13 being adapted to support said frame in an inclined position, a lever 7 pivotedto theupper surface of said frame and adapted to hold said cope upon said drag, andmeans for looking said zlever down upon said cope, substantially as described,
