BREAST-STRAP ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,647, dated May 16, 1893. l Application iiled July 28, 1892. Serial No. 441,437- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, HORACE B. FORBES, of Ogden, in the county of WVeber and Territory ot' Utah, have invented a new and Improved Harness Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in harnesses, and the object of my invention is to may be applied to the breast-plate of an ordinary single harness, and which will adapt the harness for use as a double harness. This obviates the necessity of keeping two sets of "harness, and enables two horses 4when provided with a single harness to be at once hitched into a .double rig, thus saving a good deal of time and the expense of an extra harness, and moreover, the single harnesses pro-l vided with my improved attachment are, for light work, as good as an ordinary double harness. y
To this end, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my attachment to a single harness and tothe pole of a vehicle; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the attachment when separatedfrom the harness. The attachment consists essentially of two lapping plates 10 and 11, made of metal having suflicient strength, the plate 10 having its free edge thinned and rounded slightly, as shown at 12, and made to fit snugly within. the bend 13 of the plate 11, and the latter plate has an overlapping flap or extension 14, which lies against the face ot' the plate 10, and this i'lap at its reduced free end is perforated, as shown at 14, so as to receive the fixed hook or lug 14h, which projects from the plate 10. The breast-strap to which the plates are secured is severed at a point opposite the free end 12 of the plate 10. The plates 10 and 11 have at their outer ends keepers 15, to which the straps 16 of the breast-plate 17 may be secured, and on the upper portion and near the outer ends of the plates are similar keepers 15, which are adapted to receive the brace straps 16a of the breast-plate, these straps extending upward in the usual Way over the shoulders of a horse, and they serve to support the breast-plate. are provided with perforations 17% which enable the plates to be firmly riveted to the breastplate.
Near the inner or free end of the plate 10 is a rigid, forwardly-extendingstaple 18, which projects through a slot 19 in the plate 11,and this staple is adapted to receive a snap hook 20, secured to one end of a pole-strap 21, which is of the usual kind and is secured in the ordinary way to a neck-yoke 22 carried by the pole 22a. The snap-hook is also adapted to receive the ring at thev upper end of the martingale strap 23. A swinging curved latch 24 is pivoted, as shown at 25, to the plate 11, at one side of the slot 19, and this latch The plates 10 and 1l is adapted to spring into the staple 18at'ter portions of the breast-plate are firmly locked v together. It will be seen that by throwing up the latch 24, the plate 11 may be disengaged from the plate 10, as after removing the latch, it is only necessary to push the plate 11 from off the hook 14h; but when the latch is in place, the two plates and the two parts of the breast-plate are firmly united, and to connect the harness with the neckyoke it is only necessary to apply the snap hook 20 to the staple 18 and the pole strap 21 'of the neck-yoke.
Having ythus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A harness attachment of the character described comprising two overlapping and detachably connected plates adapted to be secured upon a breast strap, one of the plates being provided with a projecting stapleor loop for connecting with a pole strap, substantially as described.
2. A harness attachment of the character described, comprising two overlapping plates t with a staple projecting through the slot of l the outer plate, substantially as described.
3. A harness attachment, comprising two overlapping plates adapted to be secured to a breast strap, theinner plate being provided with a staple and the outer plate with a slot through which the staple projects and with a latch for engaging said staple, substantially as described.
4. A harness attachment of the character described, comprising a pair of overlapping plates adapted to be secured to the breast plate of a harness, one plate having a projecting lug and a projecting staple thereon, the second plate having a perforation to receive the lug and a slot to receive the staple, and a swinging latch pivoted on the second plate and adapted to engage the staple, substantially as described.
5. A harness attachment of the character described, comprisinga pairof lapping plates adapted to be secured to the breast-plate of a harness, the outer plate having a bend therein to receive the end of the inner-plate, keepers produced on the end portions of the plates and adapted to receive adjacent harness straps, a projectinglug or hook and a projecting staple secured to the inner plate, a perforation and slot produced in the outer plate and adapted to receive the hook and staple of the inner plate, and a fastening latch pivoted on the outer plate and adapted to engage the staple of the inner plate, substantially as described.
