SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,272, dated April 11, 1893. Application filed June 6, 1892. Serial No. 435,743. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN A. SCHRAMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand usefulImprovements in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to that class of gates known as extensible gates and the improvements have more especial reference to a portable gate, capable of being transported from place to place, and set up where desired, and readily adjusted to the proper length for 010s ing breaks, gaps, door-ways, or other passages of various extent.

My improvements are particularly designed for use in closing temporary openings in fences or walls, and as a household article to be used in fencing ofi dangerous places for preventing children from becoming injured therein.

The object of my invention, therefore, is to provide an adjustable or extensible gate having portable posts or standards.

With this object in view, my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which said object and certain other objects hereinafter described, are accomplished, as fully explained with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the said drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of an extensible gate embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22, Fig. 3, on a larger scale. Fig. 3, is a vertical transverse sectional View taken on the line 33, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view illustrating a modification hereinafter described.

My invention comprises two portable posts capable of standing upright or alone without being planted and which are connected together by an extensible bar or rail; and to one of these posts, I hinge in any well known or suitable manner, one end of an extensible gate, while the other post is, or may be, pro vided with any suitable hasp or catch for the reception of a bolt or latch for holding the gate closed.

Referring now to the drawings, in which like signs of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, 1, 2, represent the gate posts, each of which is provided with a suitable lateral extension or foot 3, at its lower end, preferably underlying the post, in the form of a sill, to insure the stability of the gate and prevent the same from being overturned by wind or other force. 2, are connected together by a suitable sill or bar, 4, consisting of two sections, 5, 6, tele- 6o scoped together in any suitable manner, and being secured respectively to the lower ends of the posts or to the sills 3. The section 5 is provided with a longitudinal dovetail groove,

7, along its upper side, and the section 6 is dove-tailed throughout its length and fitted in the said groove 7 but, if desired, any other sliding connection, such as shown in Fig. 4, which consists of a strap or keeper 8, secured to one of the sections 5, 6, and surrounding the other, may be employed. The form first described, however, is preferable, inasmuch as the face of the section 6 may be flush with the surface of the section 5.

The gate proper, as already stated, maybe of any of the well known forms of extensible gates. I have here shown, however, and prefer to employ, a gate consisting of two telescopic sections, 9,10,the section 9 being hinged to the postl and the section 10 being provided with any suitable latch for engaging the usual hasp on the post 2, if such form of latching or locking mechanism should be employed. The section 9 is provided with longitudinal bars or rails 11, to which the palings' or similar members may be secured, in the ordinary manner, and these bars, 11, are formed with longitudinal dovetailed grooves 12, into which snugly fit and slide the longitudinal dovetailed bars 13 of the movable or slidingsection 10; but ingo stead of this dovetail and groove connection, it will, of course, be understood, that any other well known form, may be employed.

In order that the gate sections, 9, 10, may be secured against movement relatively to each other, one of them may be provided with l a thumb screw 14, adapted to impinge against the other; and in order that the bars 13 may not be pulled entirely out of the grooves 12, such bars are provided with blocks 15, secured too in supplemental grooves, 16, and adapted to come against and be arrested by blocks or stops, 17, at the extremities of the bars 11.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of portable posts, an extensible connection between said posts, and an extensible gate hinged between said posts, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of portable posts havin g lateral sills or supports, an extensible connection between said posts, and an extensible gate hinged between said posts, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of portable posts having lateral projections for holding them upright, an extensible sill connecting said posts together at their lower ends, and an extensible gate hinged between said posts, substantially as set forth. 7;

4. The combination of the portable posts having lateral projections for holding them upright, a sill connecting said posts together at their lower ends, consisting of two telescoped sections, and an extensible gate hinged between said posts, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the portable posts having lateral projections for holding them upright, the bar 5 having a longitudinal dovetail groove along its upper face, secured to one of said posts, a dove-tail bar secured to the other of said posts and fitting in said groove, and an extensible gate hinged between said posts, substantially as set forth.

The combination of portable posts having lateral projections for holding them upright, an extensible connection between said posts, a gate section hinged to one of said posts and having longitudinal bars provided with dove-tailed grooves, and a second gate section having longitudinal dove-tailed bars fitting in said grooves, substantially as set forth.

The combination with the posts; of a gate section hinged to one of said posts and having bars providedwith longitudinal dovetail grooves, and the stops 17, and a second gate section having longitudinal dove-tailed bars fitting in said grooves and being provided with blocks or stops on the ends thereof, substantially as set forth.
