BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,117, dated April 11, 1893.

Be it known that I, WILBUR F. OSBORNE, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new 1mprovement in Buckles, (A;) and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon,to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to that class of suspender-buckles in which the presser-bar is constructed at its lower end with a locking extension which engages with a similar extension depending from the bu ckleframe and forms a guard, preventing the escape of the ring, the object being to produce a buckle of this class, which shall be simple, cheap, convenient and efiective.

With these ends in view, my invention consists in the combination with a buckle-frame having its ends bent inward at points opposite each other, to form two bends or loops, located in its plane and each comprising an upper and a lower horizontal member and constructed with a locking extension depending from the center of its lower side, of a presser-bar located in front of the. frame, hinged to corresponding members of the said loops or bends, independent of the other members thereof and constructed at its lower end with a locking extension adapted to coact with the corresponding part of the buckleframe, and a clamping-lever, located behind the frame and hinged to the other members of the said loops or bends, independent of the members thereof to which the presser-bar is 0 hinged the said bar and lover being arranged Serial No. 442.444. The frame of my improved buckle is .made from a single piece of wire, bent into the required shape, and virtually comprises an upper side, A, a lower side A, ends B, B, having loops or bends B, B, extending inwardly from them in the plane of the frame at points directly opposite each other, and each comprising an upper and alower horizontal member and a hook O, which depends from the center of the lower side A, and forms alocking extension. The ends of the Wire are brought together in the upper side A, of the buckle, and inclosed in the usual manner, by a tube, D. The body of this frame has the form, in general outline, of a parallelogram, as usual in this class of buckles.

The presser-bar of my improved buckle is also made from a single piece of wire, and comprises the bar D, which is not, in fact, continuous, though virtually so, the loop D depending centrally from the said bar D, and forming a locking extension to coact with that of the frame, and the ends D D which are bent round the corresponding upper members b, b, of the loops or bends B, B, of the frame, independent of the lower members I) b of the said bends whereby the presser-bar is swung in front of the frame from the said bends.

The clamping-lever of my improved buckle is made of sheet-meta1,.and comprises a body E, a toothed or serrated forwardly turned upper clamping edge, E, a lip E projecting from the center of its lower edge, and turned outward, and two leaves, E E offsetting from the ends of the upper edge of the body, and turned around the corresponding lower members b, b, of the bends B, B, of the frame, independent of the upper membersb b of the said bends whereby the said clamping-lever is hinged to the back of the frame through the said bonds which thus provide means for the independent pivotal attachment of the clamping-lever and the presser-bar to the buckle-frame. When the presser-bar is in its closed position, with its loop B snapped over the hook G, of the frame, its bar proper, D, will stand just below the forwardly turned toothed clamping-edge of the clamping-lever,

the said bar and edge being thus in position to coact effectively in gripping the web,which is not shown. When the clamping-lever is in this position, the lip E on its lower edge engages with the lower side A, of the buckle frame, and limits the forward, turning movement of the lever.

It will thus be seen that by utilizing the upper and lower members of loops or bends extending inwardly from the ends of the buckle-frame, as points for the attachment of the presser-bar and clamping-lever, I am enabled to secure a very simple, effective and convenient buckle.

I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and combination of parts herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and variations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus, the hook and loops may change places or be released by members of some other locking device.

I am aware that a buckle having the ends of its frame bent inward at opposite points to form loops or bendsis old, and that such loops have been used in the pivotal attachment of a presser-bar to the frame. I do not therefore claim such a construction broadly.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a buckle, the combination with a frame having its ends bent inwardly at points opposite each other to form two bends or loops located in its plane and each comprising an upper and a lower horizontal member, and constructed with a locking extension depending from the center of its lower side; of a presserbar, located in front of the said frame, hinged to corresponding members of the loops or bends independently of the other. member thereof, and constructed at its lower end with a locking extension adapted to co-act with the corresponding part of the buckle-frame, and a clamping lever located behind the frame, and hinged to the other members of the said loops or bends independent of the members thereof to which the presser-bar is hinged, the said bar and lever being constructed and arranged to co-act in gripping the web, substantially as set forth.
