HEEL-PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,756, dated. February 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISRAEL LEVY, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Kouts, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements 1n pads or pieces which are designed to be placed and worn within the heel portion of a shoe or boot, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, form and application of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

In selecting a pair of boots or shoes from what is termed a ready made or machine made stock, it is frequently found that a perfect fit, in every point, except that of the instep, can be obtained, and that by reason of the size at said point, the foot of the wearer will slip up and down therein, the friction of which motion will cause the heel of the stocking soon to be worn out, besides being exceedingly uncomfortable to the wearer and producing corns on the toes and other portions of the foot. It is also frequently desired by persons of short-statute to appear taller without wearing high heeled boots or shoes, and in some cases where one leg is shorter than the other to pad or splice the shoe for the foot on the shortened leg, so as to make them of the same length, and thus prevent or overcome the limp or halt in their ait.

D The objects, therefore, of my invention are first, to provide a heel pad or piece, for boots or shoes, to be kept in stock by shoe merchants or others, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, yet detachable from the boot or shoe, and that can be readily inserted or Withdrawn therefrom; and second, such a pad, which by reason of its form and construction, may be worn within the boot or shoe with comfort, and will slightly raise the heel or heels of the wearer, without hugging the same, thus making him somewhat taller in stature; and third, such a pad which will prevent the wearing out of the stockings at the heel, and the production of corns or callous flesh on the foot.

- In order to enable others skilled in the art, to which my invention pertains tomake and use the samefl will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of a shoe, with its rear portion broken away, showing the foot of the wearer, and the heel pad in position. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the pad detached from the shoe. And Fig. 3, is a view in cross-section thereof, taken on line 3, 3, of Fig. 2.

Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.

A, represents a boot or shoe, made in any desired size or style.

B, is a pad which maybe made of any suitable material, and of proper size to fit within the heel portion of various sizes of boots or shoes.

The main body C, of the pad is preferably made of cork, and as shown in the drawings wedge-shaped. The point e, of which is designed to extend toward the toe of the shoe, and to a point directly under the in-step of the foot of the wearer. The piece C, is covered with any suitable material, but preferably with pliable leather D, and is padded on its upper surface by interposing between itand the covering D, a quantity of cotton E, or any other suitable soft substance.

As shown in the drawings and will be readily understood, the upper surface of the body (3, is slightly convexed as at c, and gradually inclines toward the end or point 0, while the lower surface is somewhat concaved. This form of the pad affords a comfortable and yielding base for the foot to rest on, and has a tendency to cause the pad. to remain with its blunt portion a, against the heel-stay b, of the shoe, without interference in putting on or removing the'shoe.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As an improved article of manufacture, a heel pad for boots or shoes, consisting of the wedge-shaped piece 0, having its upper surface slightly convexed and inclined toward the front, and the covering D,and padding E, interposed between the upper surface of the piece 0, and the covering substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
