Description
(NoModeL) L. A. MOGILVRA. DRAFT EVBNER.
No. 489,753; Patented Jan. 10, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIUS A. MOGILVRA, OF BARABOO, WVISOONSIN.
DRAFT-EVEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,753, dated January 10, 1893.
Application filed October 10,1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUoIUs A. MOGILVRA, of Baraboo, in the county of Sank and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Eveners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in draft eveners; and it consists in the novel features of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and more particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my improved device is to construct an evener which will most effectually distribute the weiglft of the load with one horse on one side of the tongue while two are on the opposite side.
A further object is to provide an improved means of securing the pulley to the rear of the tongue whereby it may be adjusted there on at will.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved evener. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
A, represents the pole of the wagon or harvester as the case may be and pivotally secured thereto by means of the bolt B, is the bar 0, to the outer end of which is secured a double tree to which may be attached two horses. A short distance outward from the inner end of the said bar 0, and from the pole A, is pivoted the bar D, by means of the bolt E. This last named bar extends across the pole A, in the opposite direction from the bar C, andto its outer end is secured the singletree F, for the accommodation of one horse. On the rear edges of each of the bars 0, D, are the eyes G, to which are secured the respective ends of a chain H, which passes rearward around a pulley I. This pulley is mounted in a frame composed of an upper arched plate J, and a lower flat plate K. The outer ends of the top plate I, are turned up as shown Serial No. 448,408. (No model.)
at L. The flat portions of the plates I,J, may be welded together if so desired. This frame rests flat upon the top of the rear portion of the tongue A, and is secured thereto at its front and rear ends by the clamps M, of ordinary construction which encircle the said frame ends as well as the tongue clamping the same most securely together. If by accident the clamps should become loose the frame ends are prevented from pulling from thereunder by the turned up ends L. By clamping this frame to the tongue it is made adj ustable thereon, being adapted to be moved either forward or backward along with the evener -bars.- This is of great advantage as it is often very desirable to adjust the bars either forward or backward on the pole.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,"
1. The combination of a pole, draft bars pivotally supported thereon, an adjustable frame to the rear of the bars consisting of a lower and an upper plate having extended ends, clamps which encircle the said plate ends and also the pole, a pulley within the frame, and a chain passing around the pulley and secured at its ends to the respective bars, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a draft evener, the combination of a pole, bars pivotally mounted thereon, a frame to the rear of the bars on the pole consisting of a fiat under plate having extended ends, an arched upper plate having extended ends which are turned slightly upward at their extremities, clamps encircling the extended ends of the plates and the pole, a pulley within the arch between the plates, and a chain which passes around the pulley and which is secured at its ends to the respective bars, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUGIUS A. MCGILVRA.
