IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,911, dated July 25, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. S. GORBIN, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtcnaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partofthis specification.

The present invention consists in the use of a band attached at each end to a wall, post, or any other suitable device and bent in the form of a semicircle, or nearly so, on the upper edge of which band the mouth portion of a bag is placed, and then held open and in position in order to be filled with grain or any other desired material by means of a peculiar-shaped swinging frame from the wall, post, &G., arranged and operating as will be presently described.

In the accompanying plates of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure 1 representing a front view of the same, showing a bag inserted and the position of the devices for holding it in position and open; Fig. 2, a section through holding devices and bag in plane of line a ac, Fig. l.

a a in the drawings represent the band, made of a narrow flat piece of metal bentin the form of a semicircle, or nearly so, and attached at its two ends, I) b, by means of screws or other suitable fastening devices to and upon a board, 0, or a post, wall, &c., in an inclined position, as seen in Fig. 2, and with an opening space, d, between its inner surface and the board; ff, a wire frame made by bending a wire in the shape of a semicircle, connected by a crosswire, 9, which frame f is hung at each of its ends it h to and upon fixed staples l l of the board 0, so as to freely turn thereon, and has attached to or formed with the same at its center part, m, a bent spring or arm, n, which, when theframe is swung down, bears upon the outer surface of the fixed band, locking itself under the same, as seen in Fig. 2.

Touse the bag-holder, first pass the month end of the bag up through the open space be tween the band and the board or other device to which it is attached, and grasping by the hand the middle portion of its side in contact with the band, pull it down and over the outside of the same, and then, still holdingit there, arrange the bag-mouth still farther upon the band at each of its ends .and so as to extend over its edge for its entire length, when swing the wire frame down and lock it under the band, as before described, thereby securely holding the bag thereon by binding it between the frame and the band, the frame and band being so arranged with regard to each other, and so constructed or formed, that when the frame is swung down against the band it will form a tight joint therewith throughout its whole length, whereby any device inserted between the two must be securely fastened, the spring shape of the central portion of the wire frame preventing and holding the bag from disconnectingfrom the band, as is evident without further description.

From the above description it is apparent that a holder for bags is secured by which they can be readily and easily inserted therein, and held open sufficiently to allow them to be filled with the desired material, when they can be removed by simply raising the swinging frame, arranged as described, the advantages of which are evident and important.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the fixed band a, or
