EYEGLASSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,312, dated December 20, 1892.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. GILBERT, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention or improvement relates to that part of the eye-glass termed a nosepiece or guard, and to that class or style of nose-pieces known as off-set nose-pieces or guards; the object of this style being to cause the nose-piece to clamp the nose well in toward the face and still allow the lenses to set oif or forward from the eyes. It is found in practice that off-set nose-pieces, as at present constructed, are too rigid and unyielding and hence have a tendency to hurt or cause discomfort to the nose. Itis the object of my present improvement to obviate this difficulty. v

A A represent the lens-holders, B B the supporting frames, and C the spring or bow, all constructed substantially as usual.

D D are brackets secured at their upper ends by the screws in the ordinary manner to the two portions of the.frame B. At D each of these brackets makes a bend rearward at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and from this latter portion the lower part D2 bends downward at an angle of about ninety degrees, fi. e. about forty-five degrees from the vertical line. The two bends just described form an off-set which brings the lower part D2 into the proper position to support the lower end of the springs E which forms the yielding member of the nose-clamp. It is to be understood, of course, that while the .vention is not to be limited thereto.

e fiat spring E is rigidly secured by any suitable means to the bracket at its lower end, the means shown consisting of the projection E which extends through the opening e in the steps d, formed on the lower end of the bracket D and a rivet or screw h, which extends through the screw holes g g in the spring and bracket respectively. When this spring is secured to the bracket, as above described, its line of direction is substantially the same as that of the portion D2 of the bracket. Hence as that portion points rearward at an angle of about forty-five degrees, the spring points rearward at the same angle and extends beyond the portion D2 of the bracket, at an angle to the portions D and D thereof.

H is a thin serrated spring-plate screwed to the spring E by the screws Z and h in the ordinary manner.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. The combination with an eye glass frame of a nose-clamp comprising brackets as D D rigidly secured to and extending from the frame B and having a rearwardly bending portion D and a downwardly bending lower portion D2, said bends forming an off-set and thesprings E rigidly attached at their lower ends to the parts D2 of said nosepiece, their free ends extending upwardly substantially in the same line as the portion D2 of said brackets, said upper ends being free to accommodate themselves to the nose, substantially as described.

2. The combination` with an eye glass frame of a nose clamp comprising brackets as D D rigidly secured to said frame and having the part D rearwardly bent and t-ne part D2 forward bent, said bent portions forming an offset substantially as described, the space d formed upon the lower end of the portion D2 and having a perforation therein; and springs E rigidly secured to said portion D2 by the tongue or projection E; and a rivet or screw h, substantially as and for the pur- Witnesses:
