UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J AMES H. HUNT, OF MASSILLON, OHIO.
COVER-PLATE FOR LAM P-CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,624, dated December 6, 1892.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. HUNT, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Cover-Plate for Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toa cover-plate more especially adapted for use in connection with gas-burner lamp-chimneys; and it has for its object to increase the density of the lightand at the same time decrease the consumption of gas from twenty-five to fifty percent.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiarly-constructed cover-plate hereinafter fully described in this specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the gasburner with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the cover-plate detached.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a plate of any suitable non-combustible material, preferably mica, which is formed witha central aperture 0. of a much less diameter than the lamp-chimney B, which plate in use is fitted over the top of the lamp-chimney, as shown in Fig. 1, it being provided with depending fingers c, which are formed by a wire 0, bent as shown, its fingers c passing through openings a a in the plate A, while the upper portion of such wire is bent to form guides O, in which is held to slide a plate D, also centrally apertured and formed with an extension or handle portion d, as shown.
To illustrate the advantages and use of my improvement, I will state that by placing the cover-plate over the chimney and then lighting the gas and adjusting the pressure until the flame stops smoking a compact, even,
and dense light is produced. Now should the cover-plate be removed it will be seen that the same gas-pressure will produce a flame which will be contracted, losing thereby its brilliancy.
The draft-opening in the top of the chimuey can be readily increased or diminished by adjusting the slidable plate D.
My improvement is exceedingly simple and can be readily attached to any gas burner chimney and manufactured at a nominal cost. While its use is more especially adapted for gas-burner chimneys, it is manifest that it may be used in connection with other lampchimneys.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A lamp-chimney cover comprising a main plate adapted to be held on the top of the lamp-chimney, having an aperture of less diameter than the chimney, and an adjustable plate movable on the main plate and adapted to be moved in position to increase or diminish the size of the aperture in the main plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a lampchimney cover consisting of a non-combustible base, centrally-apertured plate having depending guide-fingers, whereby it is adapted to be held on the lamp-chimney, and guides on its upper face, and a valve or movable member having a central aperture held to slide on the base-plate between its upper guides, substantially as and for the purpose described.
