Description
G. SCHMIDT.
REVERSIBLE WINDOW SASH.
Patented Nov. 8, 1-892.
WITNESSES "UNi'TED STArEs PATENT ()FFICEa GOTTLIEB SCHMIDT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA/ REVERSIBLE WlNDOW-SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,887, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed October 31, 1891. Serial No. 410,435. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB SCHMIDT, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and c'ountyof Philadelphia, State of Pen nsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Window-Sashes,
which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in reversible window-sashes and it consists, first, of a sash provided with inner and outer frames by which it maybe swung inwardly, the outer frames having hinged meeting-rails as well as raised and lowered.
It further consists of a window-sash having an outer frame with a hinged meeting-rail and a controlling-spring for the latch thereof, substantially as described.
It further consists of the combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a window with sashes embodying my invention, the same being closed. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 1, the inner sashes being open. Fig. 3 rep resents a sectional view on line as 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a view, partly sectional and broken away, of a sash embodying my invention. Figs. 6 and 7 represent perspective views of detail portions of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a window-frame, and B and 0 upper and lower sash-frames vertically movable therein. The sash-frames B and O are provided with the inner frames D and E, respectively, which carry the pane or panes of glass and are hinged to the stiles of the outer frames B and C, so as to be swung within the apartment of the room in which the windows are located, and thereby rendered easily accessible to parties within the apartment both sides of the panes for cleaning the same. Catches F on the sides of the swinging sashes D and E secure the same when closed to the outer frames. The meeting-rails G H, respectively, of the two saslrframes B and C are each hinged at one end to a stile of. their respective frame, so as to be adapted to be moved from across the window-frame, and thereby free the same of any obstruction from top to bottom thereof. The said meeting-rails G and H, as shown, are hinged, so that the rail G of the upper sash will swing downward and the rail H of the lower sash will swing upward, (see dotted lines,) so that they maybe operated when the sashes B and O are closed. To secure the ends of the said meeting-rails to the opposite stile from that to which they are hinged, each of the said stiles is provided with a shoulder J, against which the end of the meeting-rail abuts, and a tenon K, which fits into a mortise L on the end of the said meeting-rail. A spring-bolt M locks the said meeting-rail and stile together.
To look the sashes B and 0 when closed, a latch N is employed, the same being pivoted at one end in an opening in the upper sashframe and having a spring]? connected therewith, normally forcing'its outer end across the upper face of the other sash. The upper face of the locking end of the latch is beveled, so that when in the movement of either of the upper and lower sashes their meeting-rails are to pass each other. The latch is automatically pushed back into the opening, thus permitting the free movement of the sash.
The hinges of the sash E are formed so as to permit the lifting of the said sash from the outer frame and the substitution therein of a frame containing a screen.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A reversible window-sash consisting of two inner and two outer frames, each of the outer frames having vertically-movable side stiles and hinged meeting-rails and each of the inner frames being hinged to a side stile of an outer frame, substantially as described.
2. A reversible window sash having a hinged meeting-rail and a side stile on which the meeting-rail closes, said rail and stile having tenon-and-mortise joints, substantially as described.
3-. A reversible wi'ndow-sash having, an "inher and outer frame, the innenframe being hinged to the outerframe and the outer frame having a hinged meeting-rail, said parts being 5 combined substantially as described.
4. A window-sash having" hinged meetingrails, a pivoted latch secured toa meetingrail, and a .coiij-trolling spring, fer said latch, said parts being combined substantially as described.
