- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. KALLBREIER, OF TELL CITY, INDIANA.
ROAD-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,413, dated November 1, 1892.
Application filed December 2, 1891. Serial No. 413,757. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KALL- BREIER, of Tell City, in the county of Perry and State of Indiana, have invented a new 5 and Improved Road-Cart, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in road-carts; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple road-cart which is susl pended upon its springs in such away that it will ride easily and may be kept perfectly level and which is also constructed in such a manner that a person may easily get into and out of it.
To this end my invention consists in a road- Qart the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken sectional side elevation of the road-cart embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same with the 2 shafts in section. Fig. 3 isa rear view of the cart, showing the seat turned to one side; and Fig. 4 is a broken sectional plan of the front end of the cart, showing in detail the mechanism for adjusting it in relation to the front spring.
The cart-body is of the usual form, except that it is open at the rear end, and it may be of any approved style or construction. It is supported near the center on the usual springs 11, which are attached to the bent axle 12, and the latter is jourualed in wheels 13 in the usual way.
The cart is provided with shafts 14, which extend forward from the axle, and the front spring of the cart is of the usual elliptical form and is centrally secured at its upper side to the cross-bar 16, which connects the shafts 14 and supports the whiffletree. The lower side of the spring 15 is hinged, as shown at 17, to a plate 18, which is adapted to move vertically on the front end of the body and which has on its back side a rearwardlyextending bolt 19, which projects through the vertical slots in the plates and 20, which 50 plates are secured to the front end-board 21 of the body 10, and the bolt carries near its inner end a clamping-piece 22, which has lugs 23 near the ends to enter recesses in the sides of the plate 20, as shown in Fig. 3, and the clamping-piece has also a handle 24, by means of which it may be conveniently shifted. The clamping-piece is held in place by a thumb nut 25, which fits the bolt 19, as shown in Fig. 4, and the thumb-nut by holding the clamping-piece securely against the plate 2O holds the front spring 15 and the front end of the body 10 in a fixed position in relation to each other. It will thus be seen that the body may be held perfectly level, as when two or more persons are in the cart the spring will be compressed, and the plate 18, which supports the spring, may be adjusted in the manner described, so that the body and spring shall assume the correct relative positions and be held securely in said positions.
At the rear end of the cart and on the under side of the body is secured a rearwardlyprojecting step 26, which enables the person to easily enter the body, and the seat 27 is pivoted on the lug 28 on one side of the body, and the seat has at its back a depending endboard 29, which when the seat is in position for use will fit snugly against the rear end of the body, and when the seat is turned to one side the end-board will be also turned to one side, as in Fig. 3, thus leaving the body open,
so that one may easily step into it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the cart-body and its supporting-gear, of the transverse front end spring supported by the shafts and the hinged connection between the middle of the spring and the middle of the front of the body, substantially as described.
2. The c0mbination,with the cart-body, its supporting-gear, and the transverse front end spring, of a plate hinged to the middle of the under side of the spring and a clamping device for securing the plate to the middle of the front end of the body, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the cart-body, its supportingear, and the transverse front end spring carried by the shafts, of a verticallyextending plate hinged to the middle of the spring, vertically-slotted plates secured to the front end-board of the body, a bolt fixed to the spring-plate and extending. through the end-board and the slotted plates, and a fastening device for holding the bolt and plate in place, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the cart-b0dy, its supportingear, and the end transverse elliptical spring carried by the shafts, of a plate hinged to middle of the lower member of the spring and vertically-adjustable means for fastening the plate to the body at the middle of its front, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the transverse elliptical spring adapted to be suspended between the shafts and having a vertically-extending plate hinged to the middle of its lower
