H. A. HEMPEL. sUsPBNDBRs Patented Oct, 1l, 1892.
Vifnesses:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. HEMPEL, OF GOTHA, FLORIDA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters -:Patent No. 484,095, dated October 11 1892.
Application led August 3,1891. Serial No. 401,449. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. HEMPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gotha, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of suspend'ers in which the shoulder-braces are provided at their front ends with vertically-adjustable tabs or button-straps, and has the object to provide simple means for adjusting these tabs or straps up and down on the shoulder-braces without the use of buckles or clamps of metal or other hard and stiff material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved suspenders. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of one of the front ends of the Suspenders. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of one of the front ends, showing a modied construction of my invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing another modification of my invention.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the shoulder straps or braces, secured together at their rear ends and provided at their connected rear ends with a loop a, through which the rear button-tab B is drawn. This tab is provided with two eyes or buttonholes b and runs freely through the loop a, so that it can adjust itself as the` movements of the wearer may require.
O represents a vertical series of loops secured to each of the front ends of the shoulder straps or braces, and D D represent the front button tabs or straps, which run freely through these loops and are each provided with two eyes or buttonholes d. As shown in Figs. l and 2, each series of loops C is v formed of a strip of fabric, leather, or other suitable exible material, which is secured to the frontor face side of the shoulder-strap A by transverse lines of stitching c, arranged at such distances apart that a loop is formed between every two lines of stitching through which the tab or button-strap can be drawn. By arranging the tabs in higher or lower loops the length of the Suspenders is readily adjusted. The lines of stitching are preferably curved upwardly, as shown in Fig. l1, to give the body of the tab a uniform bearing upon the entire length of the line of stitching upon which it rests, thereby preventing the tab from pressing excessively upon the end portions of theline of stitching. In the modiiied construction represented in Fig. 3, each loop C is made separately of a piece of flexible material and secured to the front side of the shoulder-strap by stitching. In the construction represented in Figtthe lower portions of the two thicknesses of this loop are secured together by an upwardly-curved line of stitching e to give the tab or button-strap amore uniform bearing upon the loop.
My improved Suspenders dispense with the use of buckles or clasps of metal or other hard material, which are uncomfortable to the wearer and provide extremely-simple means for adjusting the front tabs vertically on thev shoulder-straps.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the shoulder straps or braces, of vertical series of iexible loops Yopen at their sides and secured to the front
