T. J. GORMAN.
, PAPER FILE.
Patented Oct. 4, 1892.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. GORMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER-FltE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,609, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed February 5 1892. Serial No.- 420,483. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GORMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Files, which will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the `appended claim.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my newspaper-tile as when opened for the reception of the papers. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the iile when closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the outer end of the iile asl when opened. Fig. 4 is a section on line yy, Fig. 2, and as looking to the left in said iigure. Fig. 5 is a igure similar to Fig. 4:, but only showing the means for securing the le when closed. Fig. 6 shows the tile with the paper therein.
This invention relates to a device in which newspapers are secured at the point where doubled and are thereby held for the purpose of perusal; and it consists in features of novelty that Will be next herein described, and then particularly defined in the appended claim.
Referring again to said drawings, ce represents the half of the file to which handleb is affixed, a suitable terminal cbeing secured to the opposite end, and for conveniencea screweye cl may be secured therein. The opposite half of the file is shown at e, and the halves a e are united by one or more thin butts f, as shown. At the ends of parte it is united with part ot by means of a thong A, of leather, webbing, or other strong iiexible material, which is best shown in Fig. 5 as commencing at g, extending thence across the inner face of part ot, then turning and extending across the inner face of part e, thence turning and passing around the outside of both parts a and e, as shown at p, the bight of part h being stitched through part p and also stitched at g, it extending from g to 7c and having secured to part k a hollow button l, that eX- pands and catches over the stud m, secured in part p, thus constituting a self-closing clasp. The thong A thus serves both to secure the two halves of the file together, while permitting angular movement thereof, thereby acting as a very convenient and durable form of hinge auxiliary to the butt f, and at the same time carries the button and stud by which the halves are fastened together when closed. A series of small nails or spurs t is secured in one of the halves, which close into holes formed in the other half, so as to rmly hold the paper in place.
My file is simple and easy of construction, it is quickly applied to the paper or removed therefrom, and is durable and convenient. All that is requisite is to open it, as shown in Fig. 1, then place the paper therein and close the tile, thus forcing the spurs through the paper, and then secure the fastenings at the ends, which is all the work of a moment.
I claim as my inventionsta In a paper-file, the combination, with two plano-convex holdingstrips, of a iieXible thong passing around the strips at or near their ends to serve as a hinge, one part of said thong being contiguous to the plane faces of the strips and the adjoining part contiguous to the convex faces thereof, the two parts of the thong being secured together between the strips and also on the outer side of one of said strips, and the thong having a prolongation carrying a fastening device adapted to register, when the file is closed, with a correlativo device secured to the outside of the convex portion of the thong.
