E. O. HUNT.
PACKAGE 0F MARKING MATERIAL.
Patented Sept. 27, 1892.
UNITED STATES ELLIVOOD C. III NT, OF NEIV YORK, N.
PATENT OFFICE.
PACKAGE OF MARKING MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 483,453, dated September 27, 1892.
Application filed December 31, 1881. Serial No. 416,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLWoon C. HUNT, of NewYork,in thecountyof NewYork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages of Marking Materials; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
This invention relates to improvements in packages of materials for marking linen, papers, or other articles, comprising a receptacle, marking substance, such as indelible ink, and one or more stamps or characters, preferably of rubber, with which the impression is made; and it has for its object to provide a package of simple and unique design, which may be carried in the pocket, if desired, and containing all the materials necessary for a complete marking outfit.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a package constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken vertically through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the block held in the top section. Fig. i is a similar view with the block held in the bottom section.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
In carrying this invention into practice I construct the case in the form of a bottle, preferably of wood, neatly polished and rendered as attractive as possible by suitable ornamentation. The case is formed in two parts A and B, the former having the conformation of the bottom half of the bottle and the latter the configuration of the upper half of the bottle. The lower section is provided with a concavity G, extendingin from the to or abutting face and adapted for the reception of a small bottle I) of marking substance, such as indelible ink, and the upper section is provided with a smaller concavity E, opening at the mouth of the bottle for the reception of bronze-powder or some similar substance used in the marking operation and which maybe confined in the receptacle by a plug or cork F. It is applied by means of a brush f, carried by the cork or plug.
An impression-surface, monogram, or type is adapted to be concealed in the central concavity for convenience in applying the marking substance to the surface to be marked. The type may be mounted on the bottom of the upper section, and in the preferred construction two types or rubber letters H are preferably provided, mounted on opposite ends of a type-block I, having a seat in both the sections and adapted to be carried by either section when used for marking purposes. Thc type-block itselfprefcrably forms the connection between the sections, and in order that it may be left in either section dc sired when the two are separated one end is tapered slightly and fitted tightly into one section, while the opposite end is screwthreaded and co-operates with :1 correspond ing thread in the other section. A straight pull, it will now be seen, leaves the block in one section and a rotation leaves it in the other section, permitting either letter to be exposed. I preferably scrcw-thread the lower section, as the block then performs a most important function in securing the bottle stationary and in holding its closure in place. The rubber letter, it will be seen, fits down on the bottle-closure, and all possibility of the ink escaping even were the case accidentally knocked open is absolutely prevented.
Aside from its unique character the pack age possesses such marked advantages as to at once recom mend it to the public. The necessary materials are brought together and may be carried, handled, and used with the greatest convenience.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a package of marking material, the combination, with the case formed in two parts, of the independent typo-block having seats in both sections and carrying type or characters on its opposite faces, substantially as described.
In a package of marking material, the combination, with the case formed in two parts, of the independent type-block having the tapered plug fitting in one section and the screw-threaded extension fitting in the other section and the type on opposite faces of said block, substantially as described.
3. In a package of marking material, the
ICO
combination, with the ease formed in two 1mrts,eaeh having a concavity in its abutting face, of the type-block seating in both eoncavities, the seat in one being screw-threaded, 5 and the bottle for marking material in one concavity retained in place by the block, substantially as described.
at. In a package of marking material, the combination, with the bottle-shaped case 10 formed in two parts, the upper section having a concavity in each end and the bottom section a concavity in the top, of the pi ug carrying a brush fitting in the top of the upper section, the type-block fitting in the concavities of both sections at the center, the type on said blocks, and the bottle of marking substance in the lower section, substantially as described.
