UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. VARNER, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO A. F. NAVARRE, OF SAME PLACE.
HEATER A-ND vPURIFIER FOR FEED-WATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,534, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed November 14, 1891. Serial No. 411,891. (No model.)
LTo @ZZ whom it may concern: Y fiange the cover B is tightly bolted, having Be it known that I, JOHN P. WVARNER, a citisuitable packing placed between it. The bolts zen of the United States, residing at Washingb are shown at the upper and lower ends, and ton, in the District of Columbia, have inventthe bolt-holes are indicated by the dotted 5 ed certain new and useful Improvements in circles in Fig. l. 55
Heaters and Purifiers for Feed-Water; and I The interior of the body A, which is prefdo declare the following to be a full, clear, and erably of rectangular form, with a semicircuexact description of the invention, such as lar top, is provided Witha partition C, extendwill enable others skilled in the art to which ing from side to side, and between it and the ro it appertains to make and use the same, refout shell exhaust-steam is4 admitted through 6o erence being had to the accompanying drawthe inlet-opening d, and passing to the other ings, and to the letters of reference marked side of said partition it passes through the thereon, which form a part of this specificaoutlet-opening e to a condenser or any other tion. desired place. A petcock f and g enters the t 5 My invention relates to improvements in space between said partition, and thus the 6 3 that class offeed-Water heaters and purifiers condense water can be withdrawn. Another in which Jthe wateris not only heated, but also corrugated or similar-shaped partition D is purified of all impurities and deleterious matarranged in the space formed by the partiters by the action of exhaust and live steam. tion C and forms the central space or receptazo The object of the invention is to simplify cle E, into which live steam is conveyed 7o such feed-water heaters and purifiers in such through the pipe F, that is connected to the manner that the number of pieces usually reboiler or other source of supply. A checkquired in the construction of those now in valve h is placed in the pipeF to prevent the use is reduced to a minimum; also, that by resteam returning. At the upper end of the 25 moving a single cover the entire interior of pipe F is arranged abranch pipe G, which is 75 the body of the heater is exposed to View for provided with a stop-valve t', and terminating inspection or repair; furthermore, to produce in a T-piece 7c, containing a number of pera very effective and economical feed-water foratious and forming steam-jets. This body is provided with an off pipeis providedwith asuitable stop-valve inward-projecting iiange d, preferably, alm, to be opened whenever it is necessary to though it may be an annular outer flange, if blowout the impurities, &c. A shieldf/L` may 5o desired, and project around the side. To this be provided over the outlet-opening Z to pre- 100 vent the escape of any impurities. The inlet-pipe I-I for the Water is also provided with asuitable stop-valve 71,. The partition D may be serrated or of any similar shape, if desired. A steam-jet 0 may be arranged in the pipe H to assist in forcing the water into the heater, while at the same time heating it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In heaters and pnriliers for feed-Water, the combination of the main body A, provided vvith the partition C and corrugated partition D, forming the space E for live steam in the center and on the outside of said partition C for exhaust-steam, with the steam and water inlet and outlet pipes and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. Aheater and purifier for f eed-Water, oonsisting of thefshell A, provided with the partition O and thecorrugated partition D, in oombination with the steanrppe F, having branch pipe G, having perforated T-piece k, the water-pipe H, provided with a stean1-jet o, and the mud-drum I and the exhaust-pipes, all arranged as shown, and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the main body A, provided with the partition C and corrugated pipe D, constructed as shown, with the steampipe F, having branch pipe G and T-pipe 7c at the upper end and entering into the central space E at the lower end, the exhaust inlet and outlet pipe, and the Water inlet and outlet pipe, allarrangedas shown and speeiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN P. WARNER.
