G. F. JOHNSON. BOILER ATTACHMENT.
No. 480,264. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.."-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTOF F. JOHNSON, OF MILAN, MINNESOTA.
BOILER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,264, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed March 19, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTOF F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milan, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Boiler Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for steam-boilers; and it has for its object to provide an improved mud-drum attachment for boilers, which will greatly facilitate the collecting of dirt and scales from the water and provide for the ready and convenient removal of such accumulation even while the engine is in operation and under the full pressure of the steam in the boiler.
With these and many other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a steam-boiler provided with a mud-drum attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the attachment broken from the boiler.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a steam-boiler of any ordinary type, provided in the bottom thereof, adjacent to the front end, with a depressed trap or sink B, converging downwardly and centrally tothe short discharge-pipe O. The said dischargepipe 0 leads into the inclosing mud-drum D, secured to the bottom of the boiler over said discharge-pipe and designed to receive and collect accumulations of dirt and scales from the water in the boiler and providing means whereby such accumulations can be removed. The said mud-drum is provided in one side thereof with a cleaning-hole E, inclosed by an ordinary closure or clamp F, which closes the hole when the drum is receiving the accumulations of matter from the boiler and which is opened when it is desired to clean out the drum. The said drum is further provided in one side thereof with the dischargecock G, which drains the water and steam from the mud-drum when it is desired to clean the same. A screw valve stem H passes through the bottom of the drum and carries at its upper end within the drum the plugvalve 1, which is designed to work into the Serial No. 425,590. (No model.)
discharge-pipe O and close the passage therethrough'when the mud-drum is being cleaned, and vice versa, to be screwed out of the same when it is desired to allow the accumulations to collect within the drum.
To clean the drum, the discharge-pipe is first closed by means of the valve, as already noted. The mud-drum is next discharged of the water and steam therein through the discharge-cock G, after which the cleaning-hole is opened and the accumulations of matter cleaned out, which can be done while the engine is in operation and under the full pressure of the steam in the boiler, inasmuch as the boiler is disconnected, as it were, from the mud-dru m by the valve. When the muddrum is cleaned, the discharge-cock and cleaning-hole are closed and the main valve is grad ually opened and lowered from the dischargepipe, so as to allow the drum to again fill.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patcut, is
1. The combination of a boiler having a depressed sink or trap in the bottom thereof and converging to a central discharge-opening, and a mud-drum secured to the bottom of said boiler and over said discharge-opening, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a boiler having a depressed sink or trap in the bottom thereof and converging to a central discharge-pipe, a muddrum secured to the bottom of said boiler over said discharge-pipe, and a reciprocating valve working through the mud-drum into said discharge-pipe, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a boiler having a converging depressed sink or trap in the bottom thereof and terminating in a short projecting discharge-pipe, a mud-drum secured to the bottom of said boiler over said dischargepipe and provided with a cleaning-hole and a discharge-cock, and a reciprocating valve-stem working through the bottom of the drum and carrying a plug-valve at one end adapted to enter said short discharge-pipe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
