SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,169, dated August 2, 1892.
`Application filed February 20, 1891. Serial No, 382,202. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. OAHow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to double-acting force-pumps of that class in which an auxiliary cylinder or working barrel is arranged within the outer or main cylinder, the space between the two cylinders being utilized as a water-passage.
The invention consists in theixnproved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, whereby a pum p is provided which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efciency.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a pump constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1.

l. designates the outer or main cylinder of my improved pump, the upper and lowerends of which are screw-threaded internally, as shown at 2 and 3.
4 designates an annular disk or cap, which is mounted in the cylinder near its upper end and which is grovided with ports or openings 5 and with a packing-box 6 of ordinary construction. An annular disk or cap 7 is likewise mounted in the cylinder 1 near the lower end ot the latter. Said disk 7 is provided with a central opening 8, which is screwthreaded to receive a flange 9, extending downwardly'from an annular disk 10. The latter is screw-threaded externally and is connected with the lower end of the inner cylinder or workingbarrel1l,which is thus sustained within the outer cylinder. The upper side of the disk 10 forms a seat for the upwardly-opening check-valve 12.
13 designates the bottom disk, which is secured at the lower end of the cylinder 1, packing 14 being interposed to make a tight joint. The disk 13 is suitably connected with the suction-pipo l5 and it has an upwardly-opening check-valve 16.
The upper end ofthe cylinder 1 is suitably connected with an upwardly-extending tube or cylinder 17, from the upper end of which the conducting-pipe 18 extends upwardly to the top of the well.
19 designates the plunger-tube, which consists of an exteriorly-polished brass tube, which is connected by an open cage or coupling 2O with the lower end of the operatingrod 21. The plunger 22 is composed of a hollow casting 23, which is connected with the lower end of the tube 19, and which is provided with an annular shoulder 24 and with a downwardly extending exteriorly-screwthreaded flange 25. y
2G designates an annularly-flanged disk, which is mounted upon the lower end of` the casting 23, packing 27 being interposed between the shoulder 24 and the flange of the disk 2G. The latter is provided with openings or ports 2S, covered by an upwardly-opening valve 29 of suitable construction.
rlhe packing 27 is composed of two separate rings or disks having danges that are clamped between the shoulder 24 and flanged disk 26, as will be seen by reference to lthe drawings, said packing-rings extending in an upward and downward direction and bearing closely against the inner wall of the cylinder or working barrel 1l.
Annular valves 30 and 3l, opening upwardly, are mounted upon the disks 4 and 7, respectively, to close the ports oropenings 5 in the former and similar ports or Qpenings 2 in the latter. Said annular valvesareprovided with downwardlyextending guidestems 33, working in the said ports or openings.
The cage or coupling 20, by which the plunger-tube 19 is connected with the plunger-rod 21, is provided with side openings 34 for the passage of water.
) The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. On the downstroke ot the plunger the valve 29 passes the water contained in the lower portion of the working barrel, said water passing through the tubular plunger-rod 19 and through the side open- IOO ings 34 of the coupling 20 into the cylinder 17, and thence into the exit-tube. At. the same time the downward passage of the piu nger creates a vacuum in the upper portion of the working barrel, thus causing the valve 30 to close upon its seat while the valve 3l is opened, permitting water to pass through the space between the cylinders l and ll and into the upper portion of the latter. On the upstroke the valve 29 closes. A vacuum is created in the lower portion of the working barrel, causing water to enter through the valve l2. At the same tiine the water contained in the upper portion of the working valve is forced through the ports 5 under the valve 30 into the cylinder 17 and thence into the exitpipe, the valve 3l meanwhile dropping to its seat.
My improved pump, as will be seen from the foregoing description, is exceedingly simple and compact, and isthcretore easy of construction and not liable to get out of order. The area of the ports for the passage of fluid is considerable, thus insuring the passage of a large amount of Huid on each stroke of the plunger. Provision for the passage of such iiuid is also made between the walls of the two cylinders, thus making a pump of very large capacity in proportion to its size and length of stroke. The inner cylinder or working barrel is comparativelyshort and of small diameter, and is therefore inexpensive and easy of construction. This matter is con sidered an item of great importance, inasmuch as in the manufacture of metallic pum ps much expense is caused by finishing-cylinders or working barrels of great size. I am also enabled to make the said inner cylinder or working barrel comparatively thin and frail, for the reason that it is thoroughly and efectually protected by the outer cylinder, which latter may be a rough casting of any suitable thickness.
It is known that the principle of placing one cylinder inside of another to produce a double acting cylinder is not new; nor are the ring-valves, check-valves, or the hollow piston; but what I lay claim to is the doubleacting cylinder having inside attachments and a hollow polished piston working through a stuffing-box through which piston passes onehzlt of the water raised and discharges it above the stuffing-box, which is located inside of outer cylinder and above inner cylinder. Around said stuliing box are open ports, through which the other half of water raised is discharged. The upper surface of the circular disk which contains said ports forms a valve-seat, which is covered by a ring-valve. Below the check-valve in lower end of inner cylinder and above check-valve in lower end of outer cylinder is located another circular disk containing open ports, the uppersurface of said disk forming a scat for a ring-valve, which is placed thereon, the whole cylinder with a single opening at each end screwthreaded internally to receive the respective pipes for suction and discharge. Said cylinder can be attached to any kind of pump or working head and used for either lift, suction, or force, said cylinder when joined being continuous and without projections, wherebyT a maximum diameter of pump is obtained,thus forming a straight-barreled double-acting pump that can be inserted into a drilled well of small diameter, producing thesame results as it would be in an open well.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A continuous and straight-barreled cylinder interiorly screw-threaded at its upper and lower ends, an exteriorly-screw-threaded valve disk or cap 7, vertically adjustable in the lower end of the cylinder on the threads therein and having a central threaded opening 8, an upper exteriorly-threaded valve disk or cap 4, vertically adjustable in the upper end of the cylinder on the threads therein and having a central stu fling-box inclosed within the cylinder, an annularly-iianged valved disk 9, mounted in the central threaded opening 8 of the lower disk 7, an inner auxiliary cylinder Il, secured to said disk .fl and extending upwardly therefrom to a point short of the upper adjustable disk 4f, so as to leave a communicating passage between the interior of the auxiliary cylinder and the encircling water-passage, and the hollow plunger moving in said inner auxiliary cylinder and the centrally-located stuffing-box above the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pump of the class described, the combination, with a continuous and straightbarreled cylinder, of the plunger comprising the hollow casting 22, having an annular shoulder 24, and a downwardly-extending exteriorlyscrew-threaded flange 25, au annularly-tlanged disk 2G, engaging said flange 25 and forming with the shoulder 24E a dovetailed annular groovel or recess, packing inserted in said dovetailed groove and clamped therein by said fianged disk 26, and a plunger-rod 19 and cage 20, connected with said plunger, substantially as set forth.
