By the construction of the plates as above described the chain is held rigidly by said jaw, which is absolutely necessary in order that the gripping will take a firm hold upon the pipe to be turned and when the lever l is moved in the proper direction for turning said pipe.

In Fig. 1 is shown the wrench above described in its proper position upon a pipe, which when the level' Z is moved toward the right looking at said gure the gripping-jaw 9, or more properly the tooth portion ot' the saine, will be brought in contact with the surface of the pipe to be turned, the resistance of the lever 1 being at that point where the chain G unites with the said level', and the resistance of the jaw 9 being also upon the chain 6, causing not only the said gripping portion of the jaw to corne in contact with the pipe, but also the chain G, which also, in addition t-o the said jaw, acts to grip the pipe. Vhen the lever 1 is moved in the opposite direction to that above described, the jaw would be moved from the pipe, there being no resistance, and the entire wrench allowed to be moved freely about the pipe.

The wrench above described is not only simple in construction, but very ett'ective in its results and can be used under all circumstances, either upon small or large pipes, with like results.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A chain pipe-wrench consisting of a lever 1, an extension 4, formed on one side of the saine, a chain one end of which is movably attached to the said extension, a jaw 9, adapted to be movably attached to the said lever and composed of plates 10, teeth 14, formed on the impinging surfaces of said plates, angular extensions 15, formed by the said plates, a bolt 1G for rigidly attaching the said plates together, cut-away portions 17, formed on the inner surfaces and at the ends of the said plates, leaving projections 1S, and a bolt or rivet 18 for attaching said jaw to the said lever, substantially as described.
