R. E. OHB'RRINGTON,
- HEAD REST.
No. 479,585. Patented July 26, 1892. I
J Hit/r255 7 ROBERT E. OHERRINGTON, OEHYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
HEAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,585, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed October 12, 1891. Serial No. 408,419. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. CHE-BRING- TON, of Hyde Park, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Head-Rests, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of head-rests for dental chairs and the like.
In accordance with this invention a baseblock is hollowed out or recessed centrally, which recess is filled with upholstery properly held in place to constitute a centrally-cushioned block. Two yielding supports or risers are secured to the base-block, one at each side thereof, which support a cushion independent of and above the cushion in the baseblock. This top cushion is composed of a strip of material connecting the two supports or risers and which is held taut by them and two upholstered rolls placed on said strip, one at each end thereof, adjacent to and parallel with the supports. The space between these side rolls or cushions is filled with upholstery and in combination therewith completes the top cushion. This top cushion is covered with plush or any other suitable material.
Figure 1 shows in vertical section a headrest embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the base-block and attached yielding side supports, the remaining parts being removed.
The base-block a, of any suitable shape and preferably made of wood, is hollowed out or recessed, as at a, which recess is filled with upholstery a held in place by a suitable covering, as a which is secured to the block. The risers or supports 1) are secured one to each side of the base-block a, each consisting of a bail-like frame made of wire, the ends of which are fastened to the base-block a, as shown at b These risers or supports are made spring-acting to yield to pressure, and, as herein shown, to better accomplish this result the wire frames at each end have one or more turns, as at Z). The upper ends of the risers or supports are connected together by a piece of textile material or equivalent 0,
(see Fig. 1,) which strip of material is held taut by the spring-acting risers or supports. A side cushion or roll is placed on top of the strip 0, at each end thereof, adjacent to and parallel with each riser or support I), each cushion or roll being herein shown as made by securing a strip of material, as d, to the strip a at or near its end, as at (1, adjacent the riser or support, carrying said strip over a suitable quantity of upholstery, and securing the opposite end of said strip (1 to the base-block a at d but I do not desire to limit my invention to this particular form of side roll. secured by these specific means or otherwise, the space between said cushions is filled with upholstery, as at g, and acovering g incloses the rolls or side cushions f and the upholstery g, as well as the risers or supports therefor, said covering 9 being secured at its lower edge to the base-block, as at 9 If desired, a supplementary covering of plush, leather, or other suitable material may be used to cover all the parts, it being secured at its lower edge to the base-block.
The covering g and strip or bottom piece 0 are buttoned together by suitable upholstery-buttons.
It will be seen that as the weight of the head rests on the cushion g the risers or supports 1) yield slightly, allowing the cushion g to fall down onto the cushion a while the side cushions or rolls f materially assist in giving proper shape and contour to the headrest and maintaining such shape.
I claim The side cushions or rolls f being 1. In a head-rest, a recessed base-block,
risers or supports at each side thereof, and a top cushion supported by said risers or supports, combined with upholstery, as 0. With Which the recess in the base-block is filled, substantially as described.
2. The recessed base-block and upholstery with which said recess is filled and two yield-' ing risers or supports 1), one at each side of said block, combined with the strip 0, connecting the upper ends of said risers, upholstery g, and a covering g, inclosing said upholstery and the risers or supports to form a top cushion, said covering being secured at its lower edge to the base-block, substantially as described.
3. TheIrecessed base-block and upholstery with which said recess is filled and two springacting risers or supports b, one at each side of said block, and the strip 0, connecting the upper ends of said risers, combined with side cushions or rolls f, upholstery g between them, and the covering g, inclosing said rolls and upholstery and extended over the risers to the base-block and secured thereto at its lower edge, substantially as described.
-In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ROBERT E. OHERRINGTON.
Witnesses:
