IMPROVED VALISE FOR. ARTILLEPtY-HARNESS.

Be it known that I, WARREN H. WILKIN- SON, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valises for Artillery-Harness; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the fo'lowing specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a side view of an artillerysaddle having one of my improved valises in place on it. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the two. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. et a side eevation of the Valise as separate from the S '.ddle.

The valise of artilleryharness rests on the saddle ot' the offhorse, it being held to the saddle by two straps, which go through two loops projecting from the bottom of the valise and also through four eyes projecting from the saddle. rIhe bottom of this valise has been straight from end to end. The consequence has been that while the horse was in movement the valise would more or less rock or sway on the saddle., not only to the inconvenience of the horse, but to the injury ot' the saddle and ot' the valise and fastenings of the valise to the saddle.

In carrying out my improvement, instead of having the bottom of the valise a plain surface I make it with a curve, crown, arch, or concavity to fit to and upon the top surface of `the saddle, and I also combine with the valise s) made and with side fastenings thereof, two lateral straps fastened to the bottom of the valise, the whole being as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A denotes the valise, and B the saddle. The bottom of the valise is formed with an arch or concavity, a, to receive the seat of the saddle and fit thereto.. To each side of the valise there are to be two staples or eyes, b b, for the reception of short side straps, o c, which are to be provided with buckles, and are to go through the eyes d d of the saddle and aid in holding the valise to the saddle. Besides the side straps and staples, th ere should extend in opposite di reotiens from the bottom of the valise two lateral straps, e e, which are to buckle into the saddlegirt, and thus serve the double purpose of not only aiding in fastening the valise to the saddle, but of fastening both saddle and valise to the back of the horse. Thus these lateral straps save the necessity of any girt-straps fastened to the saddle.

My improved valise, when in use, tits firmly to the saddle and only moves with it, and therefore it is not liable to the disadvantages of the ordinary valise, as hereinbefore mentioned.

I claim as my invention- 1. The improved artilleryvalise, as made with the hollow or concavity a to fit and rest upon the seat of the saddle substantially in manner as described.

2. The combination and arrangement of the bottom or girt straps, c e, with the valise made with the arched or concave bottom, as described.

3. The combination and arrangement of the four side eyes, b b b b, and their straps o c c c with the valise made with the arched or concave bottom, as described.
