UNITED STATES EMMET R. AUSTIN, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
TEA 0R COFFEE FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed March 5, 1892.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EMMET R. AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tea or Coffee Filters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a and easily-attached filter for use in making tea or coee, it being desirable in a device of this class that it be so constructed that it may be readily applied to any ordinary tea or coffee pot, that it may be readily removed and cleaned, and that the bag be prevented from swinging forward in pouring and closing up the base of the spout.
With these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel iilter which I will now describe, referring by numbers to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a coffee-pot, the side being broken away to show the application thereto of my novel filter; Fig. 2, a section of the bag, showing the metallic parts by which it is applied and held in place; Fig. 3, a plan view of the filter complete, and Fig. 4 a view of the holder removed.
l denotes the bag, which is provided at its upper end with a ring 2, provided with three (more or less) upwardly and inwardly turned lugs 3. In practice the ring and lugs are all formed from a single piece of wire, as indicated in Fig. 2. The holder consists of a strip of metal (wire may be used, if preferred) comprising a loop 4, which is adapted to hang over the edge of a tea or coffee pot, as indicated in Fig. l, a hand-piece 5 for convenience in manipulation, a downwardly-extending loop 6, which extends into the bag and which holds the latter in position, so that it cannot swing forward against the base of the spout and interfere with the free passage of the liquid in pouring, and a ring 7, which is adapted to pass within ring 2 and to be locked in position by lugs 3, all of said parts being rigidly Patent No. 478,548, dated July 12, 1892. serial No. 423.818. (No more.)
necessary to place ring 7 inside of two of the lugs, place the inward curvature inside the other lug, and then turn either ring sufficiently, so that the curvature will pass away from the lug, thus leaving ring 7 locked in position by all of the lugs.
In practice I preferably make loop 4 of sheet metal, as shown in the drawings, and reduce the surface in contact with the inner edge of the top of the pot by cutting away the top of the loop at the inner edges, as at 9, the object of this special construction being to give good wide bearing-surfaces on the inner and outer sides of the pot, and at t-he same time to remove all superiiuous metal at the portion of the loop which comes in contact with the iiange of the lid. This I find, in practice, to be a valuable feature, as it enables the lid of the coffee or tea pot to shut down closely, which would be impossible if the holding-loop were left full width at the portion engaging the inner edge of the pot.
In use the tea or codec is placed in the bag, and the device is then suspended over the edge of the pot, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the filter being preferably placed near the handle, as shown in the drawings. Loop 4 takes so little room as not to interfere with the closing of the lid in the slightest, the usual iiange upon the lid passing inside of it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A iilter for the purpose described, consistin g of a bag having at its upper end a ring provided with inwardly-turned lugs, and a holding device consisting of a loop adapted to engage the top of the pot, aloop extending downward within the bag to hold it in position in use, and a ring adapted to lit within the ring upon the bag and having an inward curvature permitting it to pass one of the lugs, the holding device being. locked within the bag by turning one of the rings slightly.
2. A tea or coffee filter consisting of a bag having a ring and lugs at the top, and a holding device consisting of a ring engaging within secured together.
