- W. B. ANDREWS.
DENTAL REFLECTOR AND TONGUE GUARD.
No. 477,791. Patented June 28, 1892:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALTER EDSON ANDREWS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DENTAL REFLECTOR AND TONGUE-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,791, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed Fehruary25, 1892. Serial N0.422,817. (Nomodeh) 7 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER EDSON AN DREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing atNo. 752 East One Hundred and Seventyfifth street, in the city and county of New York, State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original appliance known as a Rightand- Left Adjustable Tongue- Guard and Reflector, to be adjusted to mouthmirrors used in dental and oral surgery, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
The use of the improvement is to guard the tongue from injury while using excising-instruments and excavators on the posterior inferior lingual surfaces of the gums and teeth and also to guard such operations from moisture and by reflecting light on the work facilitate operations in dental and oral surgery,
Figure 1 shows the right tongue-guard and reflector detached. Fig. 2 shows the left tongue-guard and reflector detached. Fig. 3 shows a mouth-mirror used in dental and oral surgery. Fig. 4 shows mouth mirror with right tongue-guard and reflector adjusted.
A shows the tongue-guard and reflector attached to B at an angle of forty-five degrees.
B shows the back of the clasp, to which the tongue-guard and reflector is attached.
C 0 show the clasps which hold the guard onto the mouth-mirrorD.
D shows a mouth-mirror.
The tongue-guard and reflector is attached to the mouth-mirror by spring-clasps, and by aid of the mouth-mirror the adjusted tongueguard is held at the desired angle by theleft hand of the operator.
A B and O O are to be constructed of spring tempered steel or German silver, nickel or silver plated. A may or may not be faced with a mirror. B is to be attached to the mouth-mirror, Fig. 3, by the spring-clasps O O,- as shown by the cut.
The method of construction is as follows: Taking German silver as the metal, take pattern B, with O 0 attached on a plane with B. Then crimp or bend O O and foldon all sides,
as-shown on Fig. 1, so that the mouth-mirror D will just slide into the clasp thus formed. Then solder the guard A to the clasp at an angle of forty-five degrees to B, leaning toward the closed end of the clasp. The edges of A may be crimped, so that a glass mirror may be set as the reflector. to be plated.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The reflector and guard A and the backingpiece B, with its clasps O 0 formed of a single piece of metal and adapted to be secured to a dental mouth-mirror, substantially in the manner described.
