To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MATILDA A. POPOFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Blacking- Receptacle for Blacking- Stands,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in blacking-receptacles adapted especially for use in connection with blacking-stands; and the object of the invention is to provide a receptacle especially adapted for the reception of blacking in bottles and like packages and -to so construct the receptacle that a bottle may be securely held therein and the mouth exposed, thus enabling the dauber to be removed from the bottle with one hand, as the bottle will be held firmly in place.

Another object of the invention is to construct the receptacle in such a manner as to enable it to receive in locking engagement bottles or like packages of various heights and to provide a means whereby the bottle or package containing the blacking may be expeditiously and conveniently removed when empty and replaced by a full bottle or package.

The invention consistsin the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichsiinilar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a blacking-stand, illustrating the application of the improved blacking box or receptacle thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the improved blacking box or stand, illustrating a bottle in position therein; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the box or receptacle.

In carrying out the invention the box or receptacle A is made, preferably, rectangular in cross-section, but in cross-section the box or receptacle may be shaped as fancy may dictate. The box is closed upon four sides and is also provided with a bottom. The sides I have designated as 10 and 11, the front as 12, and the back as 13, while the bottom is designated by the reference-numeral 14. The front of the box is shorter than the sides and the back, and in the inner faces of the sides 10 and 11 a series of horizontal grooves 15 is prod uced, arranged one above the other at predetermined intervals apart. These grooves are adapted for the reception of alid 16, provided at its sides with tongues 17, adapted to enter the grooves in the sides of the body of the box. When the lid is in the upper grooves of the body, the upper face of the lid is preferably flush with the upper edges of the body. The lid is provided at or near its forward'end with an attached knob 18, and in its rear edge a recess 19 is produced, which extends some distance inward in direction of the center.

When a bottle 20 containing blacking has been placed in the body of the box or receptacle A,the lid is entered in the transverselyaligning grooves 15, which Will cause the neck of the bottle to enter the recess 19 when the lid is slid over the body, and yet permit the mouth of the bottle to be above the upper surface of the lid, or practically so; and when the lid is thus placed around the neck of the bottle the upper shoulders of the bottle will be beneath the lid, thus enabling a person by using but one hand to remove the stopper 21 from the bottle, to which stopper the dauber 22 is attached, and the dauber may be drawn out from the bottle without danger of spilling or spraying the liquid blacking, as the bottle in which the blacking is contained will be firmly held in an upright position. The advantages of such a box or receptacle as an addition to a blacking-stand is apparent, as it enables the stand to be used by women with as much convenience and facility as when now used by men.

In Fig. 1 I have illustrated a blacking-stand in which the foot r-est 23 is shown at the center thereof, and the improved receptacle is shown as located at one side of the foot-rest, while a clamp or support 24, adapted to receive a box of cakeblacking is shown as placed at the opposite side of the rest. It will be understood, however, that the improved receptacle may be given any position that fancy may dictate in the blacking-stand and that the stand in connection with which it is used may be of any well-known character.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. A receptacle or holder for liquid blacking, consisting of a box like body provided with a series of grooves arranged one above the other, and a lid or cover adapted to slide in the grooves, the said lid or cover being provided With an opening through Which the neck of a bottle may extend, substantially as shown and described.

2. A receptacle or holder for bottles containing liquid blaeking or other liquids, consisting of a box-like body having an opening in one side and a series of grooves or channels emanating from the opening and arranged one above the other, and a lid adapted to slide in said grooves or channels and provided with a recess or opening produced in one edge, the said recess or opening being adapted to receive the neck of a bottle contained in the receptacle or holder, as and for the purpose set forth.
