` P. GILBERT, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
iMPaovEMENT IN |N'STP.UMENTS FoP. CURING PILES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,540, dated May 2, 1865.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that 1', J. P. GILBERT, M. D., of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Instrument for Curing Piles and Constipation; and I do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact dcscription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in Which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation ot this invention. Fig. 25 is a plan or top View of the same.
, Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use ot any cold body or abod y which can be rendered cold and is provided with a nipple to enter the rectum in such a manner that by the action of said body the blood is forced out of the tumor, and as the pressure increases the benefit of the cold is obtained. The nipple serves to keep the cold body in its place, and in orfl der to allow the blood to circulate from `the tumor said nipple is provided with grooves near its base. By applying suitable ointment to the nipple the eect of this instrument can be improved, and the ointment is kept in a boX placed into the cold body, which is made hollov:r for this purpose and provided with a cover that can be readily removed and replaced. 1t' desired, this chamber maybe tilled with some freezing mixture to keep the body cold.
A represents a cold body, or,in other Words, abody made of a good conductor of heat-such as tin o r any other suitable material-or so arranged that it can be rendered cool by articial means. I t is turned oii' cylindrical or made in any other suitable form or shape, and
it is provided with a nipple, B, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The nipple is made sli ghtly tapering and rounded oii' on its tip, and of any desirable length or thickness. It is entered in the rectum of the patient so as to bring the outer edge of the body A to bear on the tumor, and by its contact with said tumor to force the blood out, and as the pressure increases to obtain the benefit of the cold body, its effect being still further augmented by the patient sitting on the cold body, so as to increase the pressure. The nipple B is provided with a series of grooves, a, near its base, to facilitate the circulation of the blood from the tumor and Vprevious to its being entered into the rectum of the patient.
Some suitable ointment may be applied to itl whereby the healing eft'ect of the instrument will be increased. The ointment is kept in a box, E, and in order to have it conveniently at hand the body A is or may be made hol-` 10W, so as to form a chamber, C, to receive the` box E, and a suitable cover, D, iitted to said chamber, serves to close it up. This cover may be fastened in its place bya screw-thread` n or any other suitable means, so that it can be readily taken oft' or replaced. If desired, said chamber can be filled with some freezing mixture to keep the body A cool. By these means a simple and cheap instrument can be placed in the hands'ot' the public, whereby any person affected bypiles or constipation is enabled toeifect a speedy eure `With little eX- pense.
ters Patenty y l. The cold body A, providedwith a nipple,
B, constructed and operating substantially as t and for the purpose specied.`
2. The grooves a in the nipple B, applied and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I claim as new and desire to secure` byLetA
