Be it known that I, THOMAS A. ORoss, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Bardwell, in the county of Carlisle and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Trace Carrier, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to improvements in trace-carriers; and the objects in View are to utilize the well-known trace-carrying leather loop and to improve the same by the addition of a cheap and simple attachment, to be used in connection with said loop, whereby the chain-trace may be connected to the loop in a simple and readily-detachable manner, so that rubbing of the chain or loop against the sides of the horse is avoided.

With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring` to the drawings, Figure l is perspective of a trace-carrier. Fig. 2 isavertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 1i is a detail in perspective of the fastening device and its supporting-plate. Fig. 5 is a detail of the chain-engaging hook.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

l. designates the back-band, to which is riveted or otherwise connected the usual tracecarrying loop 2.

3 designates a concave-convex cast-metal plate, which is provided near its center with a pair of perforations 4 and near its opposite ends with a pair of transversely-opposite perforations 5.

In forming the fastener I employ7 ablank of Wire, of suitable rigidity and length, and bend the same at its center, as at 6, forming opposite terminals, and near the central bend bend the terminals parallel to each other and upwardly to form a small hook 7, after which said terminals are downwardly bent, forming a large hook S and the shank 9. It will thus be seen that I form a hook within ahook, the small hook serving as a safety-hook to prevent any accidental disconnection of the chain-trace therefrom. After forming the two hooks the terminals or shanks are passed downwardly through the two opposite perforations 4 near the center of the securing-plate, and said terminals are then longitudinally bent in opposite directions, as at l0, and terminate flush with the ends of the securingplate. The device as thus constructed is ready for attachment to any ordinary leather trace-carrying loop, and to attach the same it is placed in the bottom of the loop and staples ll inserted in the perforations 5 of the securing-plate, and have their terminals passed through the bottom of the leather loop and clinched upon the under side thereof, so that, as will be apparent, each terminalof the hook is embraced by the securing-plate and opposite terminals of the staples.

In use the trace l2 has one of its links engaged over the main or large hook of thefastener, and, as will be seen, a ready engagement and disengagement may be accomplished between the two, while at the same time the small hook serves to prevent any accidental disengagement. By the employment of such a device the rubbing of the trace against the sides of the horse is avoided and a cheap and simple connection between the trace and loop effected.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is*- l.
