Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
SEBASTIAN VAN HENNIK AND THOMAS ALLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PU LLEY-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117.471. dated April 25, 1865.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that we, SEBASTIAN VAN HEN- NIK and THoMAs ALLEN, of the city, county, and State ot New York, have invented a new a nd Improved Pulley-Block; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enal le those skilled in the art to make and use the same, refereucebein g had to theaccom nanyin g drawings, forming part of this specicition.
The drawing represents a perspective View of our invention.
This invention consists in providin ga pulleyblock with an eXtra or supplemental sheave of larger diameter than the others, and provided with an independent chain or rope, all arranged as hereinafter set forth7 whereby considerable power is gained in operating the block or in raising weights thereby.
A represents aframc, in which three sheaves, a a' a, ot' different diameters, are placed and work on a common shaft. Around the two smaller sheaves a a a chain or rope, also passing around two sheaves, c c, which are h'tted in the frames O O, provided with hooks d, to which articles to be raised are attached, as clearly shown in the drawing. The sheave a is considerably larger in diameter than the sheave a', and around said sheave a a chain or rope, D, passes. This chain or rope D is merely for the purpose of turning the sheaves al a', and, in consequence of sheave a being larger in diameter than the sheaves a a', itV
will be seen that a considerable advantage is obtained in the application of' power to the block. The chain or rope D, it will be under stood, is not connected at all with the chain or rope B. By having the two sheaves 'c c applied to or arranged with the rope or chain B and sheaves aa', as shown, one sheave, c, will be raised as the other is lowered, and hence the work ot' raising articles-such for instance as goods from a vessel-will be greatly facilitated. p
This improvement in pulley-blocks will not augment the cost of construction and it will prove to be a valuable acquisition, as a great saving is eft'eoted by it both in time and labor.
`We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a single pulley-block, ot' the small sheaves a a', for carrying the rope or chain B, to which the weight is attached, and thelarger sheave a", attached rigidly to the first two and carrying the rol e or chain D, to which the power is applied, al1 the parts being constructed and arranged to operate as herein specitied.
SEBASTIAN VAN HENNIK. Trios. ALLEN.
