Description
(Nb ModeL) J. W. IVORY. DENTAL GERVIX CLAMP.
No 474,131. Patented May 3, 1892.
(/ ATTORNEY.
' UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES WV. IVORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DENTAL CERVlX-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,131, dated May 3, 1892.
Application filed August 2, 1890. Serial No. 360,752. (No model.)
T0 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. IVORY, asubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inven ted a new and useful Improvement in Dental Cervix-Clamps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a dental cervixclamp; and it consists of a frame with a jaw at the center thereof and a flexible tongue guided on said frame opposite to said jaw and projecting toward the same.
It further consists of a frame with screws thereon, a flexible jaw, and an opposed jaw intermediate of said screws.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a dental cervix-clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a face view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 00 ac, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a bow or arched frame, with a jaw B at the crown thereof and screws 0 at the sides, forming a clamp of the order of a dental cervixclamp.
D designates an extension of the frame opposite to the jaw B, the same forming guides for the sliding head E, to which latter is swiveled a screw F, which is fitted to a cross-bar G of the extension D.
Connected with the inner end of the head E is a tongue H, of flexible metal or other suitable material, which projects toward t-he jaw B, and being so disposed that when said jaw is in position at one side of the tooth the tongue is at the opposite side adjacent to the gum, and is free to be pressed against said gum and move, shift, or slip the same for external marginal cavities or other operations requiring such movement of the gum.
The frame A is suitably bowed, so as to fit over adjacent teeth, and when the jaw is located the screws 0 are operated so as to clamp the frame in position. The screw F is then rotated, whereby the tongue H is advanced against the relative tooth and then pushed along the tooth in such manner as to press against the gum and move or shift the same, (see dotted lines, Fig. 3,) so as to uncover or expose a marginal cavity or for other purposes, after which said tongue may be farther advanced by the operation of the screw, thus controlling the portion of the gum with which the tongue is in engagement.
The jaw B bears against the back of a tooth intermediate of the teeth, with the faces of which the screws 0 are in contact, thus holding the device firmly in place without clampcontact with the sensitive portion of the teeth, also preventing tilting of the clamp, as well as retaining it in position by action independent of the tongue 11, as the latter is held in contact with the teeth by the pressure of the screw F, but not bearing unnecessarily upon the sensitive cervix of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A frame with a jaw at the center thereof, in combination with atongue of flexible material, which is guided on the frame opposite to said jaw and projects toward the latter, forming an improvementin dental cervix-clamps, as set forth.
2. A dental clamp consisting of a frame with screws fitted therein to hold the same in position, and a flexible jaw and an opposed jaw intermediate of said screws, substantially as described.
3. A dental clamp consisting of a frame havingarches with screws fitted therein to hold said clamp in position on the tooth, an adj ustable flexible jaw, and a stationaryopposed jaw, said jaws being intermediate of said screws, substantially as described.
4. A dental clamp consisting of a frame having arches with screws fitted therein to hold said clamp in position on the tooth, and a stationary integral jaw, a flexible jaw carried by a sliding head, and means for adjusting said head, said jaws being intermediate of the screws in said arches, substantially as described.
JAMES V. IVORY.
