SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,411, dated April 19, 1892.

machines for trimming wall or other paper;
and it consists of a guiding device, substantially as described and claimed, for directing the feeding of the paper-roll to the cutters.
It further consists of the combination of parts herein set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front view of a machine embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view on line m an, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent detail views of portions of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings,A designates the frame of the machine, consisting of the end standards or castings B B and the connecting brace-bars C. Suitably journaled in the standards B B is a driving-shaft D, having a handle E for rotating the same. Secured to the shaft D is a gear-wheel G, meshing with a gear-wheel F, which is secured to a shaft H, the latter being parallel with the shaft D and also journaled in the standards B B. J ournaled in the upper and rear portion of the standards is a shaft J, formed of sections jointed at K, so as to permit the lifting of one end of the said shaft from its bearing, and thereby allow the removal from the shaft of the roll of paper which becomes wound thereon during the working of the machine. To secure the end of the paper in position on the said shaft J, a clamp or clip L is employed, the same being semi-tubular in formand having at one end the spring-arms M, embracing the shaft, the other end of the bar being held in a socket N, connected with the said shaft.
Adjustable in bearings in the front of the standards is a bar P, having fastened to its.
ends the plates Q, which form bearings for the shaft R, carrying the roll of paper to be trimmed. One end of the shaft R rests in a slotted bearing in the plate Q, so as to permit its being lifted therefrom and the placing on the shaft of the roll of paper. Alever S, pivoted to the cross-bar G and having a fulcrum connection with an arm T, which is secured to the barP by a sleeve and set-screw A serves as a means for laterally moving the shaft R, and thereby the roll of paperthereon, so that the latter may be adjusted in position to be fed properly to the knives. To prevent the roll of paper from moving laterally on the shaft R, an adjustable springuideU is provided, said guide consisting of a collar V, with aclamping-screw W, and a disk X, with sleeve Y, interposed between which collar and disk is a spring Z, said parts being mounted on the shaft R. A screw A on the frameAis adapted to bear against the bar P for fastening the latter in position. On the shaft D are mounted the cutters or knives B, and on the shaft H are secured the cutters 0, each of the said knives B consisting of two parts D and E, the part D, which is adjustably secured on said shaft D, being formed of a disk F, with flanged rim G and a sleeve H, and having secured to one side of the said disk and at equal distances apart four or more coil-springs J. of equal length and tensile strength, the part E consisting of a sleeve portion with flange L and a steel disk or plate M secured thereto, the said sleeve portion being loosely mounted on said shaft D and adapted to rotate therewith by frictional contact with the springs J of the part D. The cutters O are formed of a sleeve portion N with a flange P and a steel disk or plate Q connected therewith. The cutters B and C are mounted on their shafts and are secured in the desired position thereon, according to the width of the paper to be trimmed, by means of the screws R and S, which work, respectively, in the sleeves H and N and have their points hearing against the said shafts D and H. The springs J bear equally against the side of the plate M, so that the latter, with its sleeve, which is freely mounted on the shaft, is rotated by the frictional contact with the said springs. It will be seen that the cutting-edges of the knives B and C have a yielding contact and that the blade of a knife 0 will, notwithstanding any slight departure of the shafts D and II from parallelism, be in contact with the knife 13, and, owing to the pressure of the coil-springs J on the different quarters or sections of the plates Q, a uniform pressure will be exerted on all parts of the lower blades during their rotation, so that the out will be even or smooth at all times and Without a furry edge.
Instead of four coil-springs a greater number may be used with advantage, and it is possible to use aless numbersuch as threewithout seriously impairing the effect.
The operation of the device is as follows: The roll of paper is placed on the shaft R, the disk X of the guide U bearing against one end of the roll,the other end of the roll being against one of the plates Q, and the free end of the paper is passed over the bed T, secured at its ends to the standards, and then between the upper and lower knives, which have been adjusted to the width desired. As the paper is cut by the rotation of the knives it is wound around the shaft J, the end being secured thereon by means of the clamp or clip L, the said shaft J being connected with the shaft II by means of pulley-and-band connections. In case the roll of paper on the shaft R, owing to any irregular winding thereof, does not feed squarely to the cutters the same may be adjusted as required and by mechauism set forth. Guards V are attached to the bed T and extend over the lower cutters B, so as to depress the trimmings or outer portion of the paper and prevent it from being carried forward to the roll on the shaft J.
In place of the coil-springs J a rubber or other similar band maybe employed, the same surrounding the shaft and bearing equally at all points against the outer edge of the plates M.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A machine for trimming paper, consisting of end standards, a laterally-adjustable frame carrying a rotatable paper-holder, rotary shafts carrying adjustable cutters having spring-bearings, detachable guards attached to a bed secured to the standards and extending over the lower cutter, and a shaft for receiving the trimmed paper, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a machine for trimming paper, end standards with a connecting-brace, a bar adj ustable lengthwise in the front of said standards and having a depending arm, plates scoured to said bar at or near its ends, arotary shaft journaled in said plates having an ad- 3' ustable spring-guide thereon, and a lever pivoted to said connecting-brace and to said dopeuding arm, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A paper-trimming machine having a 1'0- tary shaft for winding the paper thereon, consisting of jointed sections, one of which has a socket and a retainingclamp for the paper, with spring-arms at one end, embracing the shaft, the other end entering the socket, said parts being combined substantially as described.
