Description

PATENTED APR. 18, 1865. J. HARVEY & F. HERKSTROETER. LAP SHAVER AND LEATHER SPLITTER.
walk,
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HARVEY AND FREDERICK HERKS'lR-OETER, or sr. LOUIS, MO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAP-SHAVERS AND LEATHER-SPLITTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 4?,30. dated April 18, 1865,.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN HARVEY and Fnnnnnron; HnnKs'raon'rnn, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new Improvement in the Lap-Shaving and Leather-Splitting Machine of John Harvcyand 133,11. Harvey, the patent on which was allowed on the 9th day of May, 186 i; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad, to the ncco-inpanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the improved machines. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a machine. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a machine.
To enable those skilled in the artto make and use our invention, we will proceed to deser'ibe its construction and operation.
We use the frame A, the eccentricroller B, and the knife 0 in. substantially the same manner as they are used in the machine invented by John Harvey and F. H. Harvey, in which the frame A consists of a bed-plate with an upright poston either end of it. These upright posts sustain the eccentricroller B between them and the cutting-knife G directl y over the roller B. The front edge of the knife 0 should be in a vertical line passing through the center of the journal or of the roller B. A continuation of the journal or, after passin g through one of the supporting-posts, has a handle, I), attached to it for the purpose or turning the roller 13.
The improvements which wenow make on the above-described machineare the adjustable pillar-block a, the pressure-roller d, the gage e, and the adjustable lockpin i, all of whichare used for the purposes hereinafter described.
. Into both of the upright posts of the frame A are fitted the adjustable pillar-blocks a. (Seen in Figs. 1 and 3.) These pillar-blocks form the bcarin gs of the journal a, and are secured to the posts of the frame A by means of the screws or a, which pass through slots left in the pillar-blocks for that purpose. By tum ing up the screws a a the pillarblocks will be secured in position. .When the screws n n are slack, the pillar-blocks may be moved ,up
or down, as may be required to bring the highest part of the eccentric B when it is turned up in the same plane with the bottom side of the knife 0.
The pressure-roller d is introduced between the twoposts of the frame A, so that its lower edge, when down, will be in the same plane with the bottom side of'the knife- The journals w of the roller 01 pass through vertical slots left in the upper ends of the posts of the frame A for that purpose, and are held down by means of spiral springs within the posts. The object of the roller d is to press the leather during the. process of cutting down hard upon the roller B, sothat it cannot run .up too high on the knife and be cutoff.
The gage e is a metal plate fastened to the machine by means of the two wires h h, which pass through lugs 3 on the posts, and may be hold fast by means or set-screws. The gage a may be set at a greater or lesser distance from the edge of the knife,'and it will thereby regulate the length of the lap, as the end of the strap or piece of leatherv to be shared should be put through the machine until it stops against the plate of the cage 0.
There is a series of holes bored in one of the ends of the eccentricroller B, as shown in Fig. 3. Into any of these holes the lockpin *5 may be inserted, which will stop the motion'of the roller when it'strikes against the frame A. t
When the machine is to be used as a lapshaver, the end of the piece of leather to be shaved should be inserted between therollei-B and the knife 0 until it steps against the gage e then the roller 13 should be turnedaround by means of the handle I) at the same time that the leather is withdrawn, and the result" of the operation will be a smoothly-shaved lap of regular tapes.
When the machineis to be used as a leathersplitter, the gage 0 should be removed entirely from the machine, the eccentric turned round i to any desirable point, and the lock-pin i inserted into any one of the holes made in the eccentric B for that purpose. The pin 5 should be put into the hole-nearest the post ofthe frame when the eccentric is in proper position, and it will then come in contact with the post and hold the eccentric in-the desired claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters position while the leather is pulled through and evenly, split.
