Description

(No Model.)
0. CHRIST r. .HOSE-GOUPL No. 472,471. Pa-tentedApr; 5, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES CHRISTY, JR, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM E. KING, OF SAME PLACE.
j HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 472,471, dated April 5, 1892.
7 Application filed June 6, 1891. Serial No. 395,394:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES CHRISTY, J12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in I Iose-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference be- 'ing had to the accompanying drawings, makdescribed, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective of a hose-coupling, illustrating my'invention; Fig. 2, a similar view of the stem portion of the coupling, the stem, and the link and lever; Fig. 3, a similar view of the socket portion, and Fig. 1 a longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
A represents the socket portion of the coupling, having a stem portion a, which may be secured to a hydrant-spout or secured in the end of a section of hose, as b, in the usual way. The outer end portion of the socket A is reinforced, as shown, to form a shoulder 0, extending from the end of the socket at X to and over a point, as y and z, to X on the opposite side. In the edge of the shoulder is provided semicircular groove d to receive the link B.
The stem portion C of the coupling is provided with neck portion a and a stem e to enter the socket A, as shown in Fig. 4. To the in Figs. 1 and 4.
sides of the stem portion is pivotallysecured a lever D, as shown at f. To this lever at a distance, as shown from its pivotal connection with the stem, is pivoted the link B, the bight of which is bent at an obtuse angle, as shown at w, to fit in the groove from y to z. A rubber washer h is placed in the socket, as shown in Fig. 4.
In operation the stem 6 is placed in the socket A and the link B passed over the shoulder '0 into the groove d. The link-leverD is then turned down and back to the position shown The pivot it" of the link B, passing inside of the pivot f, will lock the parts in position.
The ease and rapidity with which this joint can be made and unmade is greatly in its favor, no wrench being required and no screwthread to become damaged or Worn, all of which tend to reduce the cost of use and greatly add to the personal convenience of the user.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of myiuvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combinatioinin a hose-coupling, of the socket portion A, having a stem portion a, the said socket portion provided on a portion of its periphery with a shoulder 0, having in its edge a groove which extends from X on one side to y, from y to z, and thence to X on the opposite side, a stem portion 0, having a neck to enter the socket, a link-lever D,pivoted to said stem portion, and a link B, pivoted to the said link-lever and having its bight bent at an obtuse angle to conform to the groove in the shoulder c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of May, A. D. 1891. CHARLES CHRISTY, JR. WVitnesses:
W. K. MILLER, CHAS. R. MILLER.
