UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. MOLEWEE, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
QSPECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,823, dated March 29, 1892.
Application filed February 26, 1891. Serial No. 382.884. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. MCLEWEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following description, taken in connection with the drawings herewith accompanying, isa specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that classof lamps adapted to be suspended or otherwise supported in an elevated stationary position in such manner as to require the use of a ladder, stool, or other object to stand or rest upon in order to conveniently reach the same to raise and lower the wick for the purposes of lighting, adjusting the wick, and extinguishing the same, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective means for operating or raising and lowering the wick from a convenient position on the floor in order to dispense with the use of a ladder or other object to stand or rest upon to reach the lamp, and thus obviate the bother and delay usually occasioned in readily obtaining a suitable object to stand upon, and also to obviate the dangerlikely to be incurred from falling from such object. Hence my invention.
Referring to the drawings, in which I have shown my invention as applied to a centraldraft lamp, Figure 1 represents a sectional view through the center of a lamp embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 represents the wick-holder in detail.
In the drawings, A represents the body of 1 the lamp; B, the neck or that portion adapted to support the chimney or globe, (not shown in the drawings 0, the centrally-located tube or shell for the central draft, and c the airdistributer located at the upper end of said tube.
D represents the wick-holder, consisting of a suitable cylindrical shell or tube over or around which the wick d is adapted to be placed or drawn, as clearly shown, and the said wick-holder, in the present instance illustrated, is screw-threaded adjacentto its lower end for detachable connection with a weighted collar or ring E, the latter being provided with a threaded flange e for connection with said wick-holder D. The wick-holder is detachably connected with the collar or ring E in the present instance, in order that it may be detached from the latter for convenience in attaching or withdrawing the wick therefrom, although it will hereinafter appear obvious that the said parts may be formed integral without departing from the spirit of my invention. Now according to my invention the wick-holder is adapted to be adjusted up anddown to raise and lower the wick by means of a counter-balance, (represented at R) which latter has connection therewith by means of a chain or other suitable flexible connection G. The latter passes through a suitable opening a in the body of the lamp and connects with the said ring or collar E, although it is obvious that it may connect with any suitable part of the wickholder.
By means of the wick-raising mechanism as described it will be readily understood that a lamp provided with such may be supported at any desired height and its wick be adjusted from a position on the floor by simply raising and lowering the counter-balance F, it being understood that the chain or other flexible connection G is adapted to be lengthened or shortened, according to the height from the floor at which the lamp is supported, the object being to have the counter-balance within convenient reach of the operator.
Having thus set forth my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with alamp-reservoir, of a wick-operating mechanism consisting of a suitable wick-holder and a counterbalanceweight having flexible connection with said wick-holder as a means for operating the same, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wick-operating mechanism consisting of a suitable wick-holder provided with a weight attachment and a counterbalanceweight having connection with said wickholder through the medium of a chain or other flexible connection as a means for operating the same, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a lamp, of a wickoperating mechanism consisting of a wickholder provided with a weighted ring or collar constructed for detachable connection operating mechanism consisting of a Wick- 1o holder and a counterbalance-Weight supported in a position outside the fount or oilreservoir and connected with said wick-holder through the medium of a flexible connection, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM S. MCLEVVEE.
