Description

NiTn STATES IMPROVEMENT IN BUCK-SAW FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,032, dated March 2H, 1865.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM MoREHoUsE, of the city of Buiialo, Erie county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Buck-Saw Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters ot'rei'- erence marked thereon, forming a part of this, my specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved buck-saw frame; Fig. 2 a section ot' a portion thereof; and Fig. 3 a top view of the brace. (Shown in Fig. l.)
The object of this invention is the construe tion of a buck-saw frame, which, while it may be made very cheap, will at the same time be sufficiently strong to answer all the conditions of its use.
To eii'ect this, I construct theforward portion, A, and rear portion, B, of the main part of the frame in separate pieces, thus only requiring a piece of timber ot' even grain of a length equal to the length of such separate parts from which to make them. Before bending these two pieces into the form indicated in Fig. l, I join them together, as at c, and firmly unite the parts, as represented, by means of iron clips d d, which nearly encircle a portion of the parts A and B. These clips extend back upon the parts A and B a sut'tioient distance from the point of junction of said parts to give great strength to the frame and resistance to the action of the screw-nut when the saw is being strained. The clips d are secured in place by rivets, as at c o, Fig. 2.
F is a screw-rod, firmly secured in any suitable nianner to the cross brace or bar l), and passes up through the clips d, as clearly shown in Lig. 2, and at its upper end is provided a screwthread, as at f, and with a screw-nut, g, to 'dt thereon. The cross-brace D is constructed of wood, with its ends made in concave form, as at h, in such manner as to tit onto the inner face of the parts A and B, over which said ends h travel in the act of tightening or loosening the saw-blade I.
The several parts being put together as represented in Figs. 1,2, and 3, the saw-blade can be strained to any desired extent by simply turning the screw-nut g to the right hand, during' which act the bar or brace D will be raised to the extent necessary to effect the same. By reversing the screwnut g the strain upon the saw-blade will be relieved. The operation of the cross-bar D is the same whether applied to a main frame as shown in Fig. 1, or to a main frame as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination of the parts A B, clips d d, serewrod F, and screw-nut g, or their equivalents, substantially as described.
2. A sliding brace-bar, D, for effecting the straining of the saw-blade of aback-saw, substantially as described.
WM. MOREHOUSE.
