SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,021, dated March 1, 18 92.

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM O. TRAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Road- Oart, of which the following is a'specitication.

My invention relates to improvements in road-carts in which an auxiliary spring is used upon both sides of road-carts to coun- IO teract the jolting motion which is imparted by the movements of the animal which impels it, and also the counteracting of jolts and jars occasion ed by obstacles and inequalities in the roads, which last-named improver5 ment is accomplished by hanging the box or body of the cart upon metal hangers which have a longitudinal swinging movement. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

From the foregoing description of the construction of the several parts of my improved road-cart the operation thereof will be evident. The springs g are auxiliary in their function to the C-springs a. When obsta- 6o cles or inequalities are metwith in the road,

a forward swinging motion is imparted to the box or body of the cart by reason of the fact that said body is supported by hangers connected loosely to the forward ends of the spring-bars in such a manner as to permit the body to have a rectilinear swing, and the springs a, being secured to the swing-bars and also to the shafts, permit said spring-bars to have a yielding actionin a forward direction, whereby all jolts and jars and the unpleasant horse motion commonly felt in vehicles of this class is effectually avoided.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a road-card, the combination, with the vehicle-body, of the spring-bars, the leafsprings connected thereto and to the thills beneath, the C-springs connected at their upper-ends to the spring-bars and at their lower ends to the thills, and the supportinghangers arranged beneath the cart-body with. their outer ends journaled in bearings on the spring-bars, substantially as described. 8 5

In a road-cart, the combination, with the vehicle-body, of the spring-bars, the leafsprings connected thereto and to the thills beneath, the C-springs connected at their outer ends to the spring-bars and at their lower ends to the thills, and the transverse rods 1) I), having their outer ends carried in bearings d d on the spring-bars, substantially as described. 1

3.
