PIE BOX.

UNtTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AFFA ANN WHITING, OF ROCKLAND, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,987, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed October 5, 1891. Serial No. 407,744. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AFFA ANN WHITING, of Rockland, county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pie-Boxes, of which the following description,
in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
Thisinvention has forits object to construct a box or receptacle for pies and the like; and my invention consists in various details of construction to be hereinafter described and claimed.
' Figure 1 shows in front elevation a pie-box embodying this invention, the door being open to expose the interior; Fig. 2, a plan view of the pie-box shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a vertical section of the pie-box, the door being closed.
The box or receptacle is made as a cylinder and closed at each end, with the exception of one or more small holes, as 2, at the top or other desirable place for ventilation, and is divided vertically, as shown, to'form two equal and similar parts a b, one part, as a, being hinged to the other at 3 in the line of division and provided with a latch or catch at, by which shelves may be washed. I have herein represented the lowest shelf e as rigidly secured to the part b to serve as a bottom plate.
This apparatus is intended to be used by housekeepers and the like to keep pics in. It
keeps the crust from drying, and hence hardening, and in small pantries is particularly useful, as it saves much shelf-room.
The apparatus is supplied with bails or handles 6 6, by which it may be hung up, if desired, and thereby kept out of the way of rats, mice, insects, and the like.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the particular number of shelves employed, nor to the particular point the holes 2 are located for ventilation. These holes, it will be observed, are covered by a screen or netting.
\Vhile I have herein represented the box as circular, which shape is preferable, as pics are usually made circular and baked on circular plates, yet it is obvious that it may be made of any other suitable shape, the two parts into which the box is divided being equal and similar.
I claim- The pie-box herein described, consisting of the combination of the following elements: a closed box or chamber having holes for Ventilation and divided vertically, as shown, into two equal and similar parts, one part, as a, being hinged to the other part b in the line of division and provided with a catch or equivalen t,and several detachable reinforced shelves 0, corresponding in shape to the cross-section of the box and held in position in one of said parts by clips (1 and projecting into the other part when the box is closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AFFA ANN WHITING.
