\VILLIAM HENRY MABEE, OF ESKRIDGE, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,070, dated February 2, 1892.
Application tiled August 27, 1891. Serial No. 403,859. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY MA- BEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Eskridge, in the county of Wabaunsee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved washing-machine, and the same has for its object the production of a cheap, sim ple, and highly efficient device of this class which shall be automatic in its operation, effective in action, and strong and durable.
The invention comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is i an end view with parts broken away, other parts being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line ce fr, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the false bottom.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the boiler, a the lid or cover therefor, and ci' a false bottom located in said boiler and eX- tending over the entire bottom thereof. This false bottom at one side is provided with a vertical cone-like projection or extension a2, wherein are formed holes or apertures a3. The lower portion of this false bottom is inclined to one side and the edges of the latter have grooves or recesses c4, through which the water and suds return to the bottom of the boiler. To the conedke extension a2 is secured a steam-outlet pipe D.
B designates the clothes-cylinder, which is composed of longitudinally extended rods b', secured at their ends to end plates b2. From these end plates project short studs or rods b3 b4, to the latter of which a crank-handle may be secured to effect the turning of the cylinder in the starting of the operation. To stud or rod b3 is rigidly connected a paddle-wheel b5. This paddle-wheel is inclosed -in a two-part casing C, secured by hooks d or other suitable means to the adjacent end of boiler A. j This casing is made in two parts, so that the upper part or cover can be raised to admit. of the removal of the cylinder and paddle-wheel. Into the lower part of this casing projects a tube or pipe D, which is designed to be coupled to the steam-outlet pipe b, and the same is so arranged that it will conduct a current of steam generated in boiler A and escaping through pipe b, and cause the same to strike against the paddles of wheel b5. In this way the clothes-cylinder is made to revolve. The steam escaping through the holes or apertures as in the cone-like extension will be directed onto the clothes in the cylinder, and the latter being continuously turned under the action of the current of steam directed against its paddle-wheel the clothes are quickly and thoroughly washed with little or no trouble on the part of the operator.
The advantages of my invention are apparent, and it will be especially observed that a washing-machine as thus constructed is extremely simple, inexpensive, and most effective in itsoperation.
I claim as my invention--` l. The herein-described im proved washingmaehine, comprising the boiler, the false bottom having a cone-like extension provided with a series of holes orapertures anda steamoutlet pipe, and the clothes-cylinder having a paddle-wheel, a casing inclosing said paddle-wheel, and a pipe extending therefrom and detachably connected to said steanroutlet pipe, said holes or apertures in said conelike extension being on a line with the clothes in said cylinder, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the boiler and the cylinder having short studs or rods proj ectin g from its ends, of the false bottom having at one side aeone-like extension provided with a series of holes or apertures and a steam-outlet pipe, a paddle-wheel secured on one of said studs or rods, and a two-part casing inclosing said paddle-wheel and removablysecnred to one end of said boiler, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM HENRY MABEE.
