IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR COATING OIL-BARRELS AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,73 1, dated March 7, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEssE G. THOMPSON, of the city of Oarbondale, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Sizing for Kero sene-Barrels and other Gasks, to prevent leakage or waste by evaporation, and also to use for gluing wood and other materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

The nature of my invention consists in the mixing linseed-oil with glue, thereby making it penetrate more readily into the wood, and also to increase the strength of the glue, which will thoroughly unite, and by the aid of the water, before it is dried out, form a complete sizing, which after it is spread upon the inner surface of a barrel or cask and the bung being taken out, the water escapes by evaporation, and the oil and glue form a thin permanent coating.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I take a half-p0und of glue, dissolve it in water, put it in a common glue-pot, then add nearly a gill of linseed-oil, boil it until it becomes thick enough to form a coatingon a stick with which I stir it while boiling, then pourit into the barrel, turn and move the barrel cautiously until it becomes completely sized inside and the cracks and worm-holes tilled. I then let it stand thirty-six hours in a dry place and twelve hours in aroom that has a firein it, and the barrel is then ready for use. For gluing I boil out more of the water and use it in the same way as other glue.

The mixing linseed-oil with glue, as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
