R. E.- BRADBURN. OLAMP FOR BENDING SHEET IRON.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. .BRADBURN, OE LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGN OR OF ONE- HALF TO FRANK C. DIOKSON, OF SAME PLACE.
CLAMP FOR BENDING SHEET-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,733, dated January 5, 1892. Application filed August 28,1891. Serial No. 403,937- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. BRADBURN, a
invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a front View. Fig. 2isavertical section. Fig. 3 is avertical section of the machine in first act of bending. Fig. 4 is a similar view in second act of bending. Fig. 5 is a view of the spout or product after being bent.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in machines for bending sheet-iron or other metal and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character especially adapted for bending iron into spouts or linings for spouts such as are employed in elevators, mills, &c. 7
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letters A A designate the posts or frame, which are shown as provided each with a shoulder a at their upper portions. To the vertical portions of these shoulders is secured the back jaw B of the clamp.
C is the second jaw, parallel with jawB and adjustable toward and away from said jaw by means .of the threaded bolts 0, by which it is also held in place, or by other suitable means.
D is the bender plate or die, which ishinged at its lower longitudinal edge to the upper portion of the jawB and is capable of a movement to a position at a right angle thereto.
E E are the operating-levers, secured to said bender plate or die by bolts, clips, or other suitable means. The jaws B and C of the clamp are first adjusted to the thickness of the metal to be bent, one edge of which is in serted between said jaws a distance corresponding to the desired height of the side wall or flange d of the spout to be formed, and which may be determined by means of a gage or gage-pins H between the jaws A and C. The die or bender is then brought over forwardly by the operation of the levers E E, bending the metal plate over at right angles to the jaws and to the portion thereof held between said jaws, as shown at g. The bender or die is then raised, theopposite edge of the metal placed in the clamp, and the operation repeated to form the opposite side flange (1. By beveling or rounding the upper inner face of the jaw C it will be seen that the spout or lining will be formed with rounded. corners, obviating the danger of breaking.
The device above described is simple in construction, convenient, effective, and of rapid operation.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The herein-described machine for bending metal, comprising the vertical posts or frame A A, having the shouldered upper portions, the stationary horizontal rear jaw B1, secured to said shoulder portions, the jaw O, parallelwith the jaw B and adjustable toward and away therefrom, the face of said jaw C being beveled or rounded at its upper portion, the gage between the jawsA and-O, and the bender hinged at its lower longitudinal edge to the jaw B and capable of a movement to a position at right angles thereto, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. BRADBURN.
