To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUGALD I-I. ROBERTS, of Wallaceburg, in the county of Kentand Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in arrimprovement 1n gage-cocks hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a spring gagecock. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section therethrough, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of a compression gage-cock.
L represents the body of the gage-cock, provided with a threaded end 0 to screw into the boiler or pipe and with a portion N formed into a nut to receive a wrench.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, F rep resents a valve-stem carrying on its end a valve G, adapted to seat in the inner end of the gage-cock and to be normally held to its seat by a spiral spring M, surrounding the valve-stem, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In the style shown in Fig. 3 the valve-stem is marked F and has on it a threaded enlargement E to engage with a thread on the inner side of the body of the valve, by which means the valve G is screwed to its seat or opened.
In most of the forms of gage-cocks as ordinarily constructed there must either be a stuifing-box surrounding the outer end of the valve-stem and through which the valve-stem plays, or else when the'cock is opened steam will blow out around the stem. Then a stuffing-box is used, it increases friction 011 the moving stem and is apt to become leaky as the cock is used.
One of the objects of my invention is to do awaywith the necessity of using a stufiing-box, and this I attain in the following manner: It represents a chamber in the bodyL of the gagecock, which is divided into two chambers by a diaphragm I, through which is formed an opening of such size as to permit the valvestem F to pass through said diaphragm freely, but with a reasonably close fit. I On each side of the diaphragm I a hole is formed through the wall of the chamber R, (represented by K and J,) which holes open into a common discharge-nozzle II, which is the point where the visible indication of water or steam is observed. Now when the valve G is opened and steam or water rushes in around the valvestem the majority of it passes out through the opening Kinto the nozzle II. That which leaks through the opening in diaphragm I finds an easier passage to the outer air through the opening J and nozzle II than -to blow through around the outer end of the valvestem, and this seems to be assisted by the rapid passage of steam or water through the opening K, which seems to act somewhat like a siphon, so that without any stuffing-box around the outer end of the valve-stem the gage-cock may be opened freely without any escape of steam through the outer end of the body.
I11 the constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the mechanism for operating the valve consists of a bell-crank lever A G, the arm 0 being curved and having therein a curved slot E. This lever is pivoted by the pin B in an open slot Q, formed in a projection P on the body L, and the arm 0 is connected with valve-stem F by a pin D,which passes through 7 5 the valve-stem and through a slot E, the end of the valve-stem F being slotted to receive arm 0. With this construction the valvestem F may be pressed inward to unseat the valve by moving arm A of lever A O, and when it is desired to grind the valve and seat to remove any accumulation of dirt thereon the pivot B may be raised out of slot Q and the lever A 0 used as a handle to rotate valvestem F and valve G.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gage-cock having its body provided with a lateral discharge-nozzle divided into two chambers bya diaphragm through which passes the valve-ste1n of the gage-cock and having a free opening from each of said chambers into the discharge-nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
